Sicuramente tra i più apprezzati esponenti del genere EBM, il più innovativo rampollo musicale degli “anni ruggenti”, gli Apoptygma nascono alla fine degli anni ’80 ad opera di Stephan Groth e pubblicano il primo album nel 1993: “Soli Deo Gloria”.
La musica trova le sue radici tra l’electro-pop dei Depeche Mode e l’elettronica anni ’70, che vede tra i suoi iniziatori e maggiori interpreti i tedeschi Kraftwerk, ispiratori sopra ogni altro del movimento industrial.
Tuttavia l’elemento dark – depressivo troverà sempre più spazio negli anni successivi, grazie ad un ammorbidimento del sound e ad una finalità sempre più commerciale.
“7”, del 1996, è l’album che condensa in sé pressappoco tutte le varianti stilistiche della band, al massimo livello qualitativo. La tensione e la partecipazione emotiva sono al top già dalla prima traccia, ispirate dalle cupe melodie dell’organo e dalla tagliente voce monotonica di Groth.
Ascoltando la seconda traccia “Mourn”, il cuore si trova stretto in una morsa d’acciaio che però sa anche di dolcezza e d’amore, nel miglior stile dark. Una canzone per deprimersi e sprofondare in un’introspettiva riflessione sui sentimenti umani.
Repentinamente si cambia genere, anche se non in modo radicale: “Non-stop Violence” rappresenta la musica EBM più pura, ritmo martellante da disco, basso pulsante e leggere sonorità industrial; anche se non si abbandona mai l’anima dark con i frequenti spunti melodici. Nel brano successivo si abbandona la velocità per un ritmo più cadenzato, il risultato è industrial in atmosfera dark.
“Rebel” si lascia andare ad esperimanti sonori oltre ogni limite imposto dalla sanità mentale, mentre con “Deep Red” torniamo ad un EBM pulsante contaminato da liriche industrial.
La mente si tuffa di nuovo nel buco nero della depressione grazie al ritorno dark di “Nearer”, per poi impazzire del tutto spinta dall’angosciante battito da disco di “Half Asleep”.
Chiude l’album “Love Never Dies pt. 2”, che riprende parzialmente la melodia del primo brano, accompagnata dalla chitarra acustica e da una base orchestrale, piccolo richiamo alla Dark Wave dei The Cure.
Emozioni sia mentali che fisiche, ecco ciò che procura quest’album: un tornado di sensazioni anche insane che scuoterebbero qualsiasi mente, non necessariamente labile, che le avverte.
Un album fondamentale per gli appassionati del genere.
