Sembrava che in Belgio oltre che i Deus gli Zita Swoon e i Soulwax, non ci fossero altri gruppi capaci di fare buona musica rock in grado di uscire dal confine nazionale.
Bhè ecco la smentita, e non arriva certo ora, ma risale al 2000, quando gli Arid esordirono con un piccolo capolavoro: At the close of every day, conosciuto da molti anche col titolo "Little Things of Venom" (in Belgio è uscito con quest'ultimo titolo)
Alla guida della band belga, il singer Jasper Steverlinck ha uno di quei timbri che, una volta ascoltato difficilmente dimentichi, in grado di arrivare con facilità lì dove osavano le altezze del miglior Ian Astbury e, soprattutto, di sua maestà Freddy Mercury. Il giorno in cui smetteranno di perdere tempo cercando il nuovo erede, i Queen potrebbero benissimo trovare qui negli Arid il loro nuovo cantante.
Con una voce così, Jasper si pone alla guida del dolce rock barocco e malinconico della sua band, che pur agitando assieme archi, acustiche, elettriche, ritmo e pianoforte, lascia sempre in primo piano questa soavità di voce, impegnata e esile, a raccontare con calore di amori intensi e crepuscolari malinconie. E a trascinare spesso il suo gruppo vicino al sound dolce e passionale dei Queen di Innuendo, l'ultimo autentico album della Regina prima di una decade di fastidioso commercio.
E'probabile che qualcuno grazie alla Enel abbia già scoperto la bravura degli Arid, dico questo perche Me And My Melody è stata la colonna sonora dello spot Enel di qualche mese fa. Nel 2004 gli Arid sono usciti con un nuovo album All is quiet now, disco altrettanto bello, ma che non riesce a raggiungere gli stessi picchi emozionali di questo d'esordio.
Difficilmente troverete quest'album al primo negozio di dischi, ma non demordete, una volta nelle vostre mani vedrete che dopo il primo ascolto tornerete qui a ringraziarmi per questa piccola perla prima nascosta.
