Chi conosce questa band sa perfettamente che, ad ogni disco, dovrà appuntarsi le variazioni di line-up... Una volta ritornati col valido "Aqua", nel 1994 vanno via Steve Howe (per la seconda volta) nonché quel gruppetto di session men di serie A che furono annessi alla band... Per la serie "venite a farvi un giro con noi, però a fine corsa si scende"... Va via anche Carl Palmer, ed il supergruppo che fu è definitivamente andato alla malora. Adesso, perlomeno, se i loro dischi fanno flop, ci si può consolare col fatto che non è rimasto un solo big, un solo 'infallibile'. La ritrovata vocazione verso il (fondo del bicchiere dal sapore) prog di "Aqua", sparisce ancora una volta assieme a Steve Howe, sacrificato ancora una volta sull'altare del rock anni ottanta... E siamo nel 1994!
Chi vi scrive non si fa problema alcuno se il disco è fuori moda, basta che gli piaccia, e ad onor del vero questo "Aria" proprio brutto non è. In particolare grazie ai ritornelli, tutti quanti perlopiù graziosi, azzeccati. A ciò è da aggiungersi la poderosa vocalità di John Payne, davvero un vocalist eccellente. Certo, ci sono pezzi che, a mio parere, proprio non vanno, come "Are You Big Enough?", brano si direbbe inciso da Simon Le Bon Jovi, o ancora "Sad Situation", space pop rock un po' troppo prevedibile, dalle parti di tastiera che nel '94 suonano come nell''82. Od ancora in "Remembrance Day", pressoché inascoltabile pomp rock solenne, e "Military Man" (i titoli già dicono tutto), ritorno agli schemi ed ai clichées dei primi (e non certo migliori) dischi.
Come è solito per gli Asia, il brano iniziale è il migliore, ed "Anytime" rispetta in pieno la tradizione; "Summer" ha un incedere delicato e semi-acustico, ma non può fare a meno di divenire pomp. Pitrelli prova ad imitare Howe nell'assolo. Strofe debolucce e chorus carino per "Don't Cut The Wire", in cui si segnala la bella sgroppata finale, in cui tastiera e chitarra fondono i loro sounds. Tanto oscura la strofa quanto è solare il ritornello, persino con mani che applaudendo tengono il tempo, per "Enough's Enough". Certo, il solo di tastiere in stile "The Final Countdown" ci sta proprio come ci starebbe un tuffo dentro ad un bicchiere d'acqua senza sodio...
Alle cavalcate epiche, alla ricerca di 'sensazioni prog', ai viaggi interstellari ed all'FM rock di una decade fa, in due episodi gli Asia preferiscono proporre qualcosa di classicheggiante, lirico. Nell'urlatissima "Desire" Payne ed i suoi cori d'opera lirica fanno la canzone. Geoffrey Downes invece attenta ad essa inserendoci tastiere che richiamano il suono degli archi del Rondò Veneziano; "Feels Like Love" pare un estratto di una rock opera. Efficace. Ribattezzerei questo genere - considerata la mia predilezione per le denominazioni "fini a se stesse" - "Arena di Verona Rock". La conclusiva titletrack è un 'piano e voce' su cui si innestano le tastiere del Rondò Veneziano e ripartono i cori di "Desire", brano su cui evidentemente Downes e soci puntavano molto.
Dischetto carino che non allunga il fiato di una band che, se non cambia genere, o perlomeno approccio intellettuale alla propria musica, se continua a piacersi così per com'è, senza mai andare troppo per il sottile, non potrà mai sperare di arrivare-ritornare al successo. E per una volta le cose andarono come dovevano andare.
