Gli Atomic Rooster nascono agli albori del Prog Rock. Passati alla storia per i loro continui cambiamenti di formazione, hanno corso spesso il rischio di finire nel dimenticatoio. Il primo nucleo comprende, Vincent Crane alle tastiere, Nick Graham basso/voce e Carl Palmer (già insieme a Crane nei Crazy World Of Arthur Brown) alla batteria. Il loro esordio discografico, prende nome semplicemete di "Atomic Rooster". L'album è considerato uno dei picchi più alti della loro produzione. Inoltre di questo disco esiste una versione "Deluxe" con Bonus Tracks in aggiunta riguardanti alcuni pezzi già nell'album, ma con arrangiamenti diversi e registrazioni della "BBC Radio".
Si parte con "Friday 13th", forse il brano più popolare di tutto il disco. Riff accattivante e voce piena d'energia. Il basso si sposa bene con l'Hammond e il piano. Insomma nella sua complessività un pezzo molto vivace. "And So To Bed" al confronto del precedente brano è meno carico d'energia. La tastiera assume ancora la parte in prima linea, Graham dà sempre alla sua voce una particolare energia e il basso e la batteria vanno ben d'accordo. In tutta la sua durata, il pezzo si ripete negli stessi giri, ma nella sua totalità è una buona composizione. "Broken Wings" è tutta un altra passegiata. Si tratta di un Blues, introdotto da trombe "annunciatrici". Elementi fondamentali di questo brano sono, come sempre la tastiera Hammond in primo luogo, il basso e la voce. Ma anche la batteria contribuisce molto. "Before Tomorrow" è totalmente un pezzo strumentale. È inutile dire che la tastiera anche qui è a capo di tutto, ma sostenuta da una batteria ben marcata e un basso lineare. C'è da segnalare anche l'intermezzo dominato dal flauto. Con la quinta traccia, "Banstead" si ritorna al cantato. La voce è guidata dalla tastiera, che a sua volta traccia un percorso anche al basso, che nei vari allontanamenti dalla srofa fà delle cose molto interessanti. Oltre a questo, il brano si sostiene sullo stesso giro armonico di tastiera accentuato dalla voce di Graham. "S. L. Y. " è l'unico pezzo dell'album in cui incontriamo la chitarra elettrica. Il brano in questione non ha niente da invidiare alle precedenti composizioni. Si tratta di uno di quei pezzi che dopo un paio di ascolti non si toglie piu' dalla mente, per la sua strofa "ossesiva". In "Winter" la calma e la delicatezza regnano sovrane. Di contributo validissimo sono la voce e il flauto sia nella parte iniziale e centrale. Palmer fà un buon lavoro alle percussioni, in perfetta linea appunto con il flauto. "Decline And Fall" chiude maestosamente l'album. Il basso sembra essere la chiave di questo brano. . . almeno all'inizio, fino a quando non fa la sua entrata l'Hammond di Crane. Il pezzo è un "palcoscenico" per Palmer, che ci regala uno dei suoi memorabili assolo di batteria. Segue poi un connubio di basso, tastiera e batteria, che trascinano fino alla parte cantata, illudendoci che questa composizione fosse solo strumentale.
Personalmente gli Atomic Rooster come stile li vedo più vicini a i Deep Purple prima maniera e agli E, L&P (per le tastiere troppo evadenti) e non come si è sempre pensato a i Black Sabbath. Per assorbire questo album, basta ascoltarlo due volte. . . al massimo tre. Il disco entra facilmente nella testa per i suoi ritmi frenetici e per le strofe altrettanto ossessive.
