Il secondo disco dei Badlands (nel 1999 ne uscì un terzo, postumo: "Dusk") creatura dell'ex chitarrista della Ozzy Osbourne band: Jake E.Lee, periodo "Bark At The Moon","The Ultimate Sin", puo' a tutti gli effetti essere considerato come uno dei piu' fulgidi esempi di hard blues degli anni novanta. Uscito nel 1991, due dopo il piu' patinato e prodotto esordio, comunque ottimo, vedeva la band sporcare nettamente il sound con una produzione piu' scarna ed essenziale sposando nel suono il blues settantiano tanto caro a band come Free, Bad Company,Montrose,Whitesnake e Led Zeppelin.
Guidati dalla sei corde di Lee, che finalmente poteva esprimere in toto il suo grande talento di bluesman, questo e' pero' il disco di Ray Gillen, uno dei piu' talentuosi cantanti partoriti dagli anni '80 e purtroppo anche uno dei piu' sfortunati. Mancata, per motivi legali, l'occasione della vita, l'entrata dei Black Sabbath di meta' anni ottanta, quelli che si accingevano a registrare "The Eternal Idol", con cui riuscì pero' a fare alcuni concerti e alcuni demo, recuperabili in rari bootleg, la sua vita viene prematuramente interrotta da un brutto male che lo porto' via a soli 34 anni. Paragonabile ai migliori vocalist hard degli anni '70, da Paul Rodgers a Robert Plant, Gillen ebbe con questo disco, inspiegabilmente sottovalutato all'epoca, l'occasione di un riscatto di carriera e a distanza di piu' di quindici anni dalla sua morte possiamo dire che ci riuscì pienamente.
La copertina del disco, raffigurante una dispersa casetta, immersa in un ambiente paludoso e' altamente indicativa di dove andra' a parare il disco. La superformazione completata da Greg Chaisson al basso e Jeff Martin alla batteria si lancia subito, fin dalla'iniziale "The Last Time" in un Hard blues, con la chitarra di Lee sugli scudi e un organo in sottofondo a fare da tappeto alla voce imprendibile di Gillen. Pochi punti deboli in questo disco. Autentici intermezzi acustici vanno ad incastonarsi a riff piu' pesanti come in "Show Me The Way . Perle di autentico hardblues sono "Whiskey Dust", la splendida "Silver Horses", "3 Day Funk" (un funk blues che non sfigurerebbe in nessun disco dei Black Crowes) mentre canzoni piu' metal oriented come "Shine On", "Soul Stealer" e "Heaven's Train", fanno riaffiorare il passato dei musicisti di questo gruppo.
"Joe's Blues" non e' altro che una breve prova di abilita' di Lee all'acustica, mentre in "Voodoo Highway" ci stupiscono con un blues acustico con tanto di Lee al Dobro. Le due perle finali sono una cover di James Taylor, "Fire And Rain", resa naturalmente in chiave rock e "In A Dream" una canzone a cappella di Gillen, tanto per dare una ulteriore prova della sua versatilita' vocale.
Un piccolo gioiello da tramandare ai posteri , per far capire che nei primi anni '90 non esisteva solo il grunge ma anche band come i Badlands che pur durando lo spazio di due soli dischi, seppe creare un disco ricco di calore e tradizione rimanendo con un piede nel presente. Poi si sa quando due talenti come Lee e Gillen devono convivere insieme sono spesso scintille. La band si sciolse quasi subito e il triste finale l'ho gia' raccontato...
