Il sogno di ogni grande artista è che la sua opera viva di vita propria e ciò vale anche per la musica pop che, a volte, regala piccoli capolavori di perfezione compositiva che, perdendo una connotazione temporale precisa, diventano degli “evergreen”, esattamente come “52nd Street”.

La fervida verve compositiva del pianista del Bronx trova in questo lavoro piena espressione arricchendosi di una maggiore levigatezza e raffinatezza stilistica senza rinunciare, per questo, all’energia e alla freschezza dimostrata delle sue precedenti prove discografiche. Nove pezzi, alcuni dei quali costituiti da ballad pianistiche, in cui è assai evidente l’ impostazione jazz dell’artista newyorchese, il tutto condito da melodie incancellabili e soavi e da una voce calda, che si accentua soprattutto nei bridge, punto di maggior forza dell’intero disco. Tali caratteristiche si notano particolarmente nel pezzo più rappresentativo dell’album: “Honesty”, delicato elogio all’amicizia, in cui si respira un’atmosfera soft e rilassante, sancita da una struttura armonica di ispirazione jazz e interrotta da un grintoso bridge in cui la vocalità ariosa di Joel si innalza sull’ensemble strumentale.
In altre occasioni, invece, il clima diviene rovente, quasi da jam session: è il caso di “Zanzibar” con tanto di assolo di tromba boppistico alla Clifford Brown e di “Stiletto” con il trascinante ostinato di piano e basso su cui si innesta un morbido tema del sax, o ancora gli echi rock di “Big shot” con Steve Khan che imperversa alla chitarra con potenti power chords. Certamente, però, la specialità di Mr. Joel è quella di riempire la pista con i suoi rinomati “enti”, che sia il fervido sentimentalismo sognante di “Rosalinda’s eyes”, o la latineggiante “Until the night”, la qualità delle composizioni non mostra decadimenti, nemmeno nella title track finale dove, recuperando un puro blues feel, canta su un ritmo sincopato scandito di tamburi del fedele Liberty De Vitto.

Un album, in definitiva, che testimonia la sensibile genialità tecnica e compositiva di Joel contraddistinta da un pop raffinato, levigato da venature jazz ed arrangiamenti ben curati, degno del successo che i decenni a venire gli avrebbero continuato a tributare.
