Nel 1976, dopo gli enormi successi ottenuti con l'album "Piano Man" nel 1973, Billy Joel riesce ancora a "coagulare" il talento pianistico a quello di produzione dei brani con un album molto scorrevole dal titolo "Turnstiles". Questo LP fornisce otto pezzi legati tra loro ma allo stesso tempo autonomi, Billy Joel infatti suddivide in modo ottimale le tracce in base ai ritmi e alle sonorità. La copertina indica già il gusto americano che è presente n questo LP ( "Say Goodbye To Hollywood"," NY State Of Mind"," Miami 2017")
Il brano d'apertura di questo album s'intitola "Say Goodbye To Hollywood", un pezzo tra i più famosi di questo album, è un pezzo gradevole anche se non attrae l'ascoltatore in maniera completa, ma a questo ci pensa "Summer Highland Falls",la seconda canzone infatti è molto più pensata egli arpeggi di pianoforte fanno da tappeto a una melodia davvero non indifferente. Si riaprono le danze con "All You Wanna Do is dance", il brano più spontaneo e forse il meno riuscito dell'album, anche perchè considerato da molti troppo banale. Canzone dai forti toni che richiamano le sonorità blues è invece "New York State Of Mind", il cui testo descrive la vita quotidiana all'interno di New York. "James" è la canzone più dolce dell'album, potrebbe essere quasi una seconda parte di "Daniel" di Elton John, cosa che non possiamo dire per la successiva "Prelude( Angry Young Man ),in cui Billy Joel esprime tantissimo le sue doti pianistiche con l'uso della nota ribattuta, forse la canzone più energica. La successiva è "I've Loved These Days", una tra le ballad più riuscite di Billy Joel soprattutto al livello emozionale. La ciliegina sulla torta è sicuramente "Miami 2017", con una fantastica introduzione di pianoforte ed un testo che parla di un concerto tenuto a Brooklyn dove, nonostante i numerosi contrattempi, i musicisti continuano a suonare come se niente fosse.
Insomma, insieme a "The Stranger", "Piano Man", "Glass Houses" e a tanti altri questo è un album secondo me fondamentale nella carriera di Billy Joel.
