I Bardi Tedeschi sono riusciti ancora in quello che pareva impossibile, ossia rinnovare ulteriormente il loro suono pur rimandendo fedeli alo loro stile compositivo.
Questo nuovo, bellissimo singolo infatti riesce a rimanere al 100% Blind Guardian pur presentando un sound innovativo per i quattro, e ancora una volta diverso da quello esposto nel precedente 'A Night At The Opera'. Davvero incredibile, non finiranno mai di stupirci. In secondo luogo, questo minicd è anche la prova del nove per il nuovo batterista del gruppo, a cui è spettato il gravoso compito di ricevere l'eredità di un mostro sacro del drumming come Thomen 'Omen' Stachen. C'è da dire che, anche se la differenza di stile si sente, riesce a tenere in modo ottimale il confronto. Poi si vedrà meglio in sede live, ma per ora il nuovo drummer è promosso a pieni voti.
Andando ad analizzare meglio il singolo, vediamo come 'Fly' si presenta come il tipico pezzo tirato alla Blind Guardian, fatto di canti, controcanti, assoli, vibrate elettriche, un uso in fondo abbastanza limitato del sintetizzatore (rovina del precedente lavoro del gruppo) e la solita energia che caratterizza la musica dei quattro bardi. Riecheggia un pò l'eco di 'Somewhere Far Beyond', ma alla fine dell'ascolto è quasi impossibile dare un parere negativo del brano. Il nuovo lavoro dei Blind promette quindi bene, e sono più che ottimista riguardo alla buona riuscita del CD, che uscirà nei negozi verso la fine d'agosto. Buone anche la 2 b-side: una gustosissima 'Skald And Shadows', che dà una grande nostalgia delle grandi ballad del passato, e una cover di un pezzo sacro della musica moderna come 'In A Gadda Da Vida' degli Iron Butterfly, che sinceramente rappresenta il punto debole del singolo, a causa della sua inutilità.... una cover di cui decisamente potevamo fare a meno, ma comunque divertente e particolare, che merita un ascolto ma niente di più.
In definitiva, Fly rappresenta un nuovo importante punto per la storia dei Blind Guardian. E chi li dava per finiti, bhe, ricredetevi, perchè ancora una volta i quattro bardi sono stati capaci di sorprenderci in positivo dopo piu di vent'anni di operato alle spalle.
