Sono spesso restio a recensire album recenti di gruppi d'annata, senza che prima vengano trattati le origini, ma in questo caso mi tocca fare un'eccezione. Il lavoro in questione è "Heaven Forbid" dei Blue Oyster Cult.
Gruppo rock nato negli anni '70 che ci ha regalato perle di dischi, come "Blue Oyster Cult" e "Secret Treaties" e brani che hanno fatto la storia della musica come "(Don't Fear)The Reaper" e "Astronomy", coverizzata anche dai Metallica nel loro "Garage Inc.". La produzione di questo disco è mastodontica. Il suono è perfetto ed il cambio di batterista si fa sentire. Per questo cd, infatti, viene assoldato un batterista compatto e potente che ricorda molto il rimpianto Cozy Powell. Sto parlando di Bobby Rondinelli. Per lo più turnista, vanta collaborazioni con i Rainbow ("Difficult To Cure" e "Straight Between The Eyes") e Black Sabbath, ("Cross Purpose"). Non posso negare di essere suo ammiratore ed estimatore della sua non sopraffina, ma potente tecnica.
Ma ritorniamo in tema disco. "Heaven Forbid" esce nel 1998 e, se trascuriamo la colonna sonora "Bad Channels", l'ultimo studio album, il mastodontico concept "Imaginos", risale a ben 10 anni dalla data di uscita di questo lavoro. Diciamo che è un bel periodo di inattività, ma tutto questo tempo non è corso invano.
All'apertura si assaggia già la durezza di questo disco. "See You In Black" ci introduce un ritmo terzinato e molto blueseggiante, che poi tramuta in un pezzo puramente heavy coadiuvato dalla doppia cassa quasi spesso presente. La successiva "Harvest Moon" sembra rallentare un attimo il ritmo. Via le distorsioni, chitarre pulite, molta melodia. Quest'unico brano firmato dal chitarrista Donald Roeser, sembra ricordare per certi versi "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", ma in tutti i modi è toccante e ben realizzato.
Si prosegue con un brano dal ritornello quasi epico e maestoso : "Power Underneath Dispair"che mantiene ancora molto alto il livello musicale di questo cd. Ancora una volta, a seguire di una canzone abbastanza aggressiva, ne viene inserita un'altra molto più melodica ("X-Ray Eyes").
Ma si tratta solo di coincidenze, perchè "Hammer Back" ritorna su toni puramente heavy e ritornelli maestosi, ed anche "Damaged", la migliore del disco, è un brano sorretto da un ritmo incalzante che ti coinvolge anche nel cantanto. La successiva "Cold Gray Light Of Dawn" ricorda molto "Rock Soldiers" di Ace Frehley soprattutto nell'introduzione, ma comunque non fa cadere in basso la mia valutazione
L'album assume anche qualche connotato funky in occasione di “Real World” introdotta e sorretta da una traccia di chitarra particolarmente ritmata. "Live For Me" e "Still Burnin'" ritornano su sonorità più pesanti, la prima più melodica, mentre la seconda è prepotentemente accompagnata da doppia cassa perenne, ben amalgamata al pezzo.
La conclusione del cd è affidata ad un pezzo semi-acustico, "In Thee", forse evitabile ma pur sempre apprezzabile.
Qualche curiosità : i testi sono stati per lo più ideati dallo scrittore di libri fantascientifici John Shirley, fan dei Cult da lunga data.
