E' un vero peccato che gruppi talentuosi come i Blue Öyster Cult siano sconosciuti ai più; eppure tutta la scena metal deve molto a questa fantastica band nata dalle malsane menti dei fratelli Bouchard. I testi e le sonorità capaci di creare atmosfere intense e cupe rendono i Cult un episodio raro e prezioso nel panorama musicale degli anni '70.
"Some Enchanted Evening" coglie perfettamente lo spirito e la grinta che la band trasmetteva in sede live dandoci in pasto una manciata di tracce prese da delle esibizioni della fine dei '70. In origine quest'album era composto da sole 7 brani, troppo pochi per un live (anche se in realtà sono state vendute un milione e passa di copie negli States). Per nostra fortuna l'anno scorso è uscita una nuova versione dell'album che contiene ben 7 bonus track ed è accompagnata da un DVD bonus con un'altra intera esibizione (qui filmata) della band.
Inserendo il primo Cd audio la prima traccia, introdotta dal solito announcer, è R U Ready 2 Rock, canzone carica e dura perfetta per caricare da subito il pubblico. Inutile dire che questa e quasi tutte le altre canzoni sono suonate in modo eccelso, quasi a superare le rispettive versioni live. Per E.T.I. vale praticamente lo stesso discorso della precedente track: dal vivo perde qualcosa dal punto di vista dell'atmosfera ma guadagna sicuramente impatto e coinvolgimento. Astronomy è un episodio a parte della tracklist. E' l'unica canzone che non convince pienamente; per carità, è suonata molto bene, ma senza la presenza di quelle parti di pianoforte che caratterizzano la versione in studio la canzone perde molto fascino. Arriva la prima cover del platter, Kick Out The Jams dei poco conosciuti MC5, una canzone carina e orecchiabile nulla di più. Godzilla e (Don't Fear) The Reaper molto probabilmente non hanno bisogno di nessuna presentazione essendo in pratica le canzoni-marchio della band ed essendo eseguite alla perfezione. Altra cover, We Gotta Get Out of This Place degli Animals. Sicuramente l'avrete sentita da qualche parte, in ogni caso la versione dei BOC è decisamente migliore dell'originale.
Eccoci arrivati alle bonus track. M2 262, Harvester of Eyes e Hot Rails To Hell sono tratte dal secondo e dal terzo album della band, del primo periodo insomma, e sono eseguite (ormai mi sto solo ripetendo) con grande bravura e precisione. (This Ain't The) Summer of Love è una traccia che, a parer mio, poteva essere tranquillamente omessa, non è all'altezza delle altre insomma. Com'è giusto che debba essere, arriva il momento dell'improvvisazione con 5 Guitars in cui appunto i chitarristi (e soprattutto il bassista) ci mostrano le loro doti tecniche. La terza (e ultima) cover è quella probabilmente più famosa. Chi non conosce infatti Born To Be Wild dei Steppenwolf, la canzone che ha introdotto il termine stesso di Heavy Metal? Questa versione è più moderna di quella originale e la voce di Eric Bloom la rende sicuramente più espressiva dell'originale. Per qualche arcano e sconosciuto motivo a chiudere il CD è un'altra versione di We Gotta Get Out Of This Place. Bah.
Il DVD contenente l'esibizione filmata dei BOC è purtroppo di qualità buona ma non eccelsa; in particolare la regia compie un lavoro mediocre limitandosi alle solite 3-4 inquadrature. In ogni caso è un aggiunta che fa sicuramente piacere.
In conclusione questo live può tranquillamente essere considerato alla pari degli altri "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees" e "Extraterrestrial Live" i quali ritraggono la band negli altri 2 "periodi".
