15 anni fa usciva questo disco.
Un ritorno sulla scena mondiale di quello che era stato la colonna portante dei Queen per tutti i vent'anni e più di attività. Un uomo che non ha mai deluso, che è stato capace di emozionare e di emozionarsi. Mai una sbavatura, mai un'imperfezione in due decadi d'attività. Vent'anni di esperienza che si vedono tutti in quest'album.
Brian e la sua Red Special riescono a creare qualcosa che, anche se non spettacolare, può degnamente rendere onore a questa coppia uomo/strumento, che ormai è qualcosa di più. Ecco quindi il vero "Back To The Light", ritorno alla luce per "le sei corde della Regna". Alcuni hanno detto che in questo disco May si lascia tutto alle spalle, ma secondo me avviene un'altra cosa: Brian cerca (e ci riesce) di rinnovare leggermente quelli che furono i canoni che fecero grande la Regina, il tutto però, con la sua voce meno intensa e potente di quella di Freddie, ma sicuramente dolce e delicata, che riesce a fare da perfetta cornice ai brani vecchi e nuovi presenti nel disco. Comunque i cambiamenti ci sono e si vedono, soprattutto nella formazione in cui spicca Cozy Powell alla batteria, che regge benissimo il confronto con Taylor.
L'album inizia con un intro molto particolare: quella che sembra una ninna nanna, si trasforma in un potente riff di chitarra con in sottofondo poche parole ma alquanto significative: "...We will rock you...". Dopo questa introduzione emblematica, ecco la Title-Track. "Back To The Light" sembra un ritorno ai Queen, con la potenza della batteria e della chitarra, con il classico ritmo che trasporta. Si sente tutto l'impegno di Brian che fa il lavoro doppio. La sua voce riesce ad essere delicata e potente allo stesso tempo e riesce ad accompagnare i cori con la Red Special. A metà canzone, infatti, ecco l'assolo che riesce ad essere classico ed innovativo. Il tocco particolarissimo della Rossa Speciale si sente, e fa da sottofondo unico alle canzoni. Un nuovo assolo finale fa terminare la canzone, una bella canzone, intensa, nel pieno stile regale e nel pieno stile May.
Alla track 3 sentiamo subito quella che sembra un vago accenno a "Headlong" o "I Want It All", ma che più avanti si rivela nuova e con un altro stile. Purtroppo il tono un po' troppo "Hard" della chitarra non regge alla voce di May forse adatta a brani più delicati. Nonostante ciò l'inconfondibile tecnica e arte si uniscono anche qui nel Brian magico e inarrivabile. Anche "Love Token", quindi molto ben riuscita, ed ecco poi "Resurrection", che parte con la batteria potente e la chitarra carica. "Fa tanto Hard Rock" tipo "Sheer Heart Attack". La quinta canzone è a noi ben nota. Ecco infatti "Too Much Love Will Kill You" semplicemente unica. Anche se la canzone è a noi nota cantata da Mercury, in questo album fa la sua prima comparsa, per poi tornare in veste originale solo 3 anni dopo con "Made In Heaven". Si sente che Brian ce la mette tutta e si capisce che per lui questa canzone è qualcosa di diverso. Con "Driver By You" l'atmosfera diventa più hard e si vede la capacità di May di andare avanti sapendo guardarsi all'indietro. "Nothin' But You" guarda ad "Innuendo" tra rock psichedelico e hard rock, con a seguire "I'm Scared" molto vivace e molto classica
Le canzoni successive sono abbastanza monotone, quindi evito il track by track, per arrivare direttamente alla bellissima "Last Horizon", splendida esecuzione strumentale molto malinconica come buona parte dell'album.
In definitiva "Back To The Light" è un bell'album, che consiglierei ma comunque abbastanza pop e non molto impegnativo. E' palese che May non si è sforzato troppo a cercare nuovi sound, ma è comunque un lavoro da apprezzare e da conoscere, soprattutto dopo le ultime.

Back To The Light rimane uno strepitoso e quasi perfetto esordio solista per Mr. May.
