Il mitico chitarrista dei Queen, Brian May, dopo il successo ottenuto un anno prima con il gruppo per "Innuendo" e la storia, ormai non più mistero, su Freddie Mercury, indimenticabile frontman dei Queen, si è lasciato "alle spalle tutto" per concentrarsi, anche con un po' di sofferenza, sul suo primo album solista "Back To The Light", miscela Hard Rock pomposa di chitarra e batteria, dove alloggiava per quest'album Cozy Powell, vecchia gloria dei Black Sabbath.
L'inizio è molto psichedelico e stravolgente: "The Dark". Poi esplode nella title track, degna dei migliori tempi con i Queen, segue "Love Token" e "Resurrection", splendidi riffs e grande momento Rock.
Questo disco contiene poi un successo ritenuto "successo" in "Made In Heaven", "Too Much Love Will Kill You", splendida ballata echeggiante "Save Me", epoca Queen.
L'album è comunque orientato verso l'Hard Rock e il Country Rock, con delle magnifiche canzoni soft: una grande prova è "Last Horizon", ricorda "Bijou", la classe e la purezza senza sbavature di Brian May in questo brano e nell'intero album è stupefacente. La tecnica quindi c'è e non manca neppure su "Nothin' But Blue", intenso brano di avvolgimento dove addirittura all'inizio ci si sente avvolti dai delfini, capace solo al genio artistico di Brian May.

Brian e la sua Red Special riescono a creare qualcosa che, anche se non spettacolare, può degnamente rendere onore a questa coppia uomo/strumento.
Troppo pop e non molto impegnativo, ma comunque un lavoro da apprezzare e da conoscere, soprattutto dopo le ultime.

Brian May dimostra di essere in grado di reggere la scena anche da solo.
Back To The Light rimane uno strepitoso e quasi perfetto esordio solista per Mr. May.
