Ai primi due dischi della storia della band sembra appartenere buona parte dei brani di questa raccolta di outtakes e ripristini. A "Ferment" ed a "Chrome" somigliano per sonorità, struttura e gusto.
Nel rispetto della migliore tradizione, tra la polvere e gli scarti si trova sempre qualcosa di prezioso e di inspiegabilmente messo da parte, o peggio ancora dimenticato. Qui di roba che non serve a niente ce n'è, eccome, a cominciare dall'inutile cover di "Wish You Were Here" per continuare con la sonnolenta "Car" o la nioiosa "Saccharine": per essere shoegaze non basta sparare le chitarre alla velocità del suono ad intervalli regolari, né tantomeno aiuta la scelta di cantare con trecenti echi. Per fare shoegaze ci vogliono trame buone da suonare e linee melodiche ariose, valide da cantare.
Nella mischia, ancora, brani di shoegaze ottimi per gli amanti del genere ma non di valore assoluto, che s'alternano a gemme da "best of", a cominciare dall'intrigante "Mouthful Of Air", sofisticatissima e sottovoce. Ed ancora menzione per "Girl Stand Still" tra chitarre-carillions, tocchi ed arpeggi, echi e pizzichi, guizzi e zampilli. Più che in "Ferment", "Backward Gitar" ed i suoi ritornelli violenti al punto giusto, starebbe benone dentro a "Chrome". Invece proprio nello stile e nella qualità del debutto-capolavoro di Dickinson e soci è "Tongue Twisted": un brano tormentato, senza tregua, tra mille Sali e scendi.
Quattro stupende canzoni che ti lasciano l'amaro in bocca, perché ricordano cosa i Catherine Wheel avrebbero potuto continuare a produrre, se avessero deciso di non dare l'assalto alle charts cambiando (più volte) genere.
