Caro DeBaseriano, ti è mai capitato di innamorarti dell'immagine di un gruppo? A me, è capitato con i Crime e quindi il primo consiglio che posso darti, se ancora non conosci questo gruppo, è quello di ricercare in rete loro materiale iconografico, dalle copertine dei (pochi) dischi pubblicati, alle locandine dei concerti, ai flyers ... Che vestano i panni di gangster anni quaranta o le uniformi della locale polizia di San Francisco, immortalati in un bianco/nero d'autore, i Nostri appaiono come credibili protagonisti di un romanzo hard-boiled alla Dashiell Hammett.
Johnny Strike, Frankie Fix, Ron "The Ripper" e Hank Rank si autoproclamavano il primo ed unico gruppo rock'n'roll di San Francisco. Boriosi e tracotanti al punto giusto, ma anche consapevoli della propria grandezza.
Perché sono stati tra i più grandi, a dispetto di una discografia ufficiale a dir poco esigua, comprendente solo due singoli, i deflagranti «Hot Wire My Heart / Baby You're So Repulsive» del 1976 e «Muder By Guitar / Frustration» del 1977; in realtà, esiste anche un terzo di singolo, il (a mio avviso) prescindibile «Maserati / Gangster Funk» del 1980.
E però a testimoniare il valore del gruppo sono anche e soprattutto gli altri, numerosi episodi che all'epoca rimasero chiusi nei cassetti: da «San Francisco's Doomed» a «Rock'n'Roll Enemy No. 1», da «Crime Wave» a «Piss On Your Dog», sono solo alcuni tra i diamanti portati in superficie con questa antologia, a testimonianza di un talento indiscutibile.
Si tratta, è vero, di diamanti grezzi (ché la qualità di incisione non è il massimo), ma ci sono casi in cui la perfezione e la pulizia del suono così come la precisione dell'esecuzione, non sono di certo un difetto; ed è il caso dei Crime, per l'appunto.
Suonavano punk, i Crime, ed infatti li potrai trovare catalogati in qualche antologia del genere. Ma erano punk più nell'attitudine che nella sostanza: la loro era infatti una miscela dai sapori antichi, di blues e rock anni '50, filtrata attraverso l'urgenza e la tensione settantasettina. Per rendere l'idea, credo che se i Rolling Stones fossero stati contagiati dall'ondata punk, allora invece che «Exile On Main Street» avrebbero potuto realizzare uno qualsiasi dei brani presenti in questa antologia; ma sono altrettanto convinto che Jon Spencer, suonando «Now I Got Worry», abbia tenuto ben a mente la lezione dei Crime.
Parafrasando una definizione appiccicata ai suddetti Stones da qualcuno che ne capisce molto più di me, suonavano davvero «lerci e stomacali» i Crime, forse a ragione «The first and only rock'n'roll band in San Francisco».
