UN BEL WHISKEY E IL RE FIGO. Incredibile. Dave "sincopato" Matthews ha hatto di nuovo un bel disco. Era dal secolo scorso, e cioè dai tempi di "Crash" (1996) che aspettavamo un disco del genere, infatti a parte gli innumerevoli live, nemmeno "Everyday" e "Stand Up", (l'ultimo), erano paragonabili alla bellezza dei primi lavori.
"Big Whiskey" esce ad un anno dalla morte di Le Roi (da qui il Re) Holloway Moore, saxofonista della band, mancato prematuramente in seguito a complicazioni intervenute a causa di un incidente, alla guida di un quad - ed è giustamente a lui dedicato, fin dall'intro "Grux", un assolo di sax molto carino che apre la strada al tipico FUNKETTONE 100% DMB di "Shake Me Like A Monkey", entusiasmante da subito.
In questo bel disco ritroviamo un Dave Matthews con una voce sempre straordinaria (a me ricorda a tratti quella di Sting), che all'occorrenza si fa roca o in falsetto, all'interno dello stesso brano, o da un brano all'altro, dal timbro quasi "Plant-iano" di "Time Bomb" ai toni quasi al limite di ballate "strappamutande" ma mai ruffiane come "You & Me" e "Lying In The Hands Of God".
E' ispiratissimo Dave "faccia da bravo ragazzo" Matthews, tanto da scrivere una paccata di brani tutti belli, non c'è un passo falso in questo disco, ma cosa c'è di nuovo? Assolutamente niente, tranne un pò di verbo rock un pò più presente, forse, ma la miscela è quella esplosiva e complessa dei gloriosi anni 90, e cioè quella che incorpora dosi straordinariamente perfette di rock, fusion, tanto funk, groove micidiali ed eleganza jazz, ma restando assolutamente POP, miracoli possibili solo a pochi maestri, concedetemi un nome, Bruce Hornsby, tra gli altri.
Come al solito è un disco che in Italia non venderà, perchè ha un suono completamente fuori dagli schemi e dalle mode, è troppo americano ed avendo una qualità musicale alta è destinato a chi ama stare con le orecchie aperte, a chi piace analizzare e scomporre i suoni e le tessiture.
Insomma, raga, poco fumo e tanto arrosto. Ah, dimenticavo: o piace subito, E TANTO, altrimenti niente, e vabbè...!

Il disco è un omaggio al saxofonista LeRoi Moore e restituisce la complessità sonora e l'eleganza tipica della band degli anni '90.
