Resto sempre un po' incupito quando, a zonzo per il mondo, trovo un cesto pieno del "GRATIS HITS" di qualcuno che io non ho nemmeno mai sentito. Ma come? Io DeBaseriano incallito, musicista e musicologo (ah ah ah) quasi DeProfessionista?
Vabbeh, l'occasione è gradita per recensire il CD, per altro senza preconcetti. Allora compro (prezzo onesto, come sempre all'estero), e scrivo.
L'inizio con "You're The World to me" la dice lunga... si parla di LOVE SONGS! ma che bella novità. Cmq la canzone è picevole, patinata e pop al punto giusto. "Babylon" è un po' troppo scontata e il ritornello è un pochino lagnoso perche David ci dà di naso alla Dylan senza essere Dylan. "The one I love" non brilla per originalità del titolo, ma la melodia è più riuscita e trascinante nonostante lo sfondo musicale molto prevedibile.
Con "Please Forgive me" registro il pirmo tentativo di dare qualcosa di musicalmente un po' particolare. L'"ostinato" di piano e batteria in effetti prende bene, anche se non cambia praticamente mai. Carina, comunque, nel complesso, ma il sottofondino con i soliti archi triti e ritriti l'avrei evitato. "Be mine" brilla per l'atmosfera e per il ritornello da accendino allo stadio; canzone riuscita. "Hospital food" ne segue la scia senza esaltare ma sta bene in piedi e fa risaltare un po' meglio di altrove la voce dell'autore.
"This year's love" sembra qualcosa di Elton John che non ricordo, vuota, troppo lenta e pesante con i soliti archi di rinforzo. "Alibi" senza infamia ne lode, "Sail away" ti ricorda tanto qualcosa di già sentito sopra ma il ritornelo acchiappa e i soliti archi provano, ma non riescono, a rovinare una melodia vocale che nel complesso regge bene. "Shine" (live), funziona benino grazie alla voce anche se musicalmente troppo povera.
"Caroline" è bella e abbastanza ricercata anche dal punto di vista della produzione e della scelta dei suoni. Ha qualcosa di country nei cori e nello slide di chitarra che appare ogni tanto. "The Other Side", molto lenta, piano e voce, carina ma un po' vuota, nonostante il tentativo di dare del brio con una batteria dagli echi lontanamente techno. "Farms Turns Blue" funziona benino quando l'arpeggio di chitarra da una mano da sotto, per il resto lentina anzichenò. Si chiude con "Destroyer" che non mi piace proprio.
Rileggendo mi accorgo di essere stato cattivo, e allora aggiungo che i suoni sono molto banali, riverbero ovunque (troppo nel piano), e la produzione scontata come di più non si potrebbe. Basso non pervenuto, ritmica da elementari. Per i più tecnici direi che la mia impressione è quella di un bel "edit all" finale con un "effetto POP" da 4 soldi di quelli che ti danno di default nei programmi di incisione dipo Cubase o Garage Band.
Per riequilibrare le sorti, però, aggiungo che tuttosommato si tratta di un disco pop\acustico onesto, piacevole se ascoltato come sottofondo. Per capirci una cosa alla Simply Red con un po' più di abilità cantautorali di fondo e meno attenzione alla produzione. Nulla di epocale, comunque, secondo me, soprattutto se queste sono le greatest hits.
