Dopo il successo del debutto "The Night Of The Demon", che aveva scioccato per le sue tematiche orrorifiche e per il devastante live act, che li vedeva eseguire i brani travestiti da demoni tra candele, croci ed altri oggetti macabri (un po' come i nostrani Death SS), e che li aveva inseriti di pieno diritto tra i gruppi più importanti del movimento musicale noto come NWOBHM, nel 1982, rimpiazzati il chitarrista Clive Cook con Les Hunt e il bassista Paul Riley con Chris Ellis (gli altri membri erano il cantante Dave Hill, il chitarrista Mal Spooner ed il batterista John Wright), arruolato il tastierista Andy Richards (che avrà in realtà un ruolo marginale), i Demon si riunirono per dare alla luce un'altra perla della loro produzione: "The Unexpected Guest".
E' possibile respirare le atmosfere horror tipiche del gruppo già dalla inquietante intro, "An Observation", lenta e caratterizzata da vaghi suoni spettrali, che vengono spazzati decisamente via dalla bellissima "Don't Break The Circle" (che sarà coverizzata in seguito dai Blind Guardian), con i suoi bellissimi riff ricamati da una chitarra suadente ed evocativa e dalla voce graffiante di Dave Hill: non ci sono qui le ricercatezze atmosferiche tipiche di gruppi successivi e contemporanei (come lo Steve Sylvester nazionale e soci), bensì puro Metal deciso e direi quasi brutale, che lascia comunque trasudare da quelle note una cattiveria tutta particolare, quasi impossibile da descrivere a parole, ma che allo stesso tempo secondo me anticipa alcune soluzioni future dell'Horror Metal. Come restare fermi poi all'ascolto della successiva, meravigliosa "The Spell", con il suo refrain da brividi ed un finale a base di campane e di macabri cori quasi gregoriani? Le successive "Total Possession", "Sign Of A Madman", "Victim Of Fortune" e "Have We Been Here Before" sono canzoni assolutamente belle, rocciose, grazie ai loro riff quadrati e alla stupenda voce del nostro Hill, ma a mio modesto parere inferiori rispetto ai due diamanti iniziali (esclusa l'intro): del resto, come poteva essere diversamente? "Strange Institution", più lenta ed evocativa, ci riporta a livelli di altissima classe, grazie anche all'interpretazione sofferta del grande cantante, livelli che anche la successiva "The Grand Illusion" mantiene alla grande. Se l'inizio del disco era affidato ad una coppia di canzoni stupende, così la conclusione viene lasciata ad una doppietta meravigliosa: "Beyond The Gates" e "Deliver Us From Evil" sono due songs potenti ed evocative al massimo, che chiudono un disco fantastico, ingiustamente dimenticato.
La carriera dei Demon, dopo questo "The Unexpected Guest", continuerà fino ad oggi tra alti e bassi, con una formazione estremamente instabile e ruotante attorno al carismatico Dave Hill (secondo me una delle voci più belle del Metal in assoluto), attestandosi come cult band e raccogliendo consensi soprattutto tra un pubblico di nicchia. Di questo fantastico periodo ci rimangono perle come "Don't Break The Oath" e "The Spell", a testimonianza di un gruppo importantissimo per lo sviluppo del genere, ma che la sfortuna ha condannato a non poter ottenere tutto il successo che a mio parere avrebbe meritato pienamente.
