The Singles 86>98 è una raccolta del periodo d'oro dei Depeche Mode; qui troviamo alcune delle più belle canzoni del gruppo inglese. Ma oltre a una raccolta di canzoni ci troviamo anche di fronte all'ascesa di un gruppo, alla sua esplosione a livello mondiale, alla sua esplosione (nel senso negativo del termine) a livello umano e poi alla rinascita e alla ripresa del cammino. L'ascesa del gruppo fa parte del periodo 1986-1990 dove già si avverte che il gruppo ha classe, che Martin Gore sa scrivere e che Dave Gahan sa cantare da dio.
Si inizia con "Stripped" canzone oscura, nera dove la voce di Dave si fa sentire e si sposa nel finale con quella di Martin, il pezzo trascina l'ascoltatore e il nero della canzone avvolge chi ascolta; davvero un bell'inizio. Un'intro di batteria ci porta su "A Question Of Lust", cantata da Martin, è sicuramente un pezzo molto commerciale, molto melodico, insomma da hit parade; Martin canta bene, ma, almeno chi scrive, preferisce la voce di Dave. Contrapposta a "A Question Of Lust", troviamo "A Question Of Time", veloce, ballabile, movimentata: tutto il gruppo qui è al massimo e (oddio!) la voce di Dave è molto simile a quella di un improbabile Marilyn Manson, sicuramente questo pezzo è uno dei migliori brani della raccolta. Lasciamo il periodo Black Celebration e buttiamoci a capofitto in Music For The Masses con il gruppo sempre più vicino alla consacrazione a livello mondiale (l'album arrivò al 10imo posto negli Uk, 35esimo negli Usa). "Strangelove" è il primo singolo estratto dal disco; è un brano orecchiabile, davvero ben fatto. Tocca poi a una delle canzoni più belle degli anni Ottanta e uno dei capolavori dei Depeche Mode, ovvero "Never Let Me Down Again", che, con quell'intro di chitarra elettrica supportata da una massiccia batteria fa ballare tutti, ma proprio tutti. Il cantato di Dave è suadente, avvolgente, solo la presenza di questo brano vale l'acquisto della raccolta. La parte finale della canzone è cantata da Dave e da Martin: capolavoro!! "Behind The Weel" è anch'esso un brano oscuro, cupo con il cantato affidato alla mente e al braccio del gruppo. L'esplosione a livello mondiale dei Depeche Mode avviene con Violator (2° in Uk, 7° in Usa) che, grazie ai suoi singoli, risulta essere uno dei dischi più venduti dei Depeche. Si parte con "Personal Jesus" e col riff geniale di Martin Gore: una canzone cha fa ballare, che fa muovere anche i muri, grazie alla chitarra e alla batteria, qui molto presente, insomma un capolavoro che ancora oggi fa saltare i fan ai concerti. A capolavoro segue capolavoro, parliamo adesso di "Enjoy The Silence", canzone di un bellezza, di un minimalismo che fa paura, un picco toccato da Martin Gore, difficilissimo da ripetere due volte (lui c'è riuscito... ascoltate "Precious"). "Policy Of Truth" e "World In My Eyes" chiudono poi il periodo di Violator: certamente due buoni singoli, con i quali si chiude il primo cd. La seconda parte della raccolta è l'esplosione a livello mondiale della band; ormai la pressione si sente e anche nel disco del 1993 Songs Of Faith & Devotion, la tensione è palpabile. Un altro riff, meno efficace di quello di "Personal Jesus", ci porta a "I Feel You", dove è la voce di Gahan a farla da padrone; la canzone è molto bella e subito si sente che la band ha un po' messo da parte le sonorità elettroniche per suonare con strumenti "veri" (lasciatemi passare il termine). Qualche nota di pianoforte ci introduce "Walking In My Shoes", che io reputo molto commovente davvero diventa difficile trattenere qualche lacrimuccia quando si ascoltano canzoni come queste: bellissima, un gioiello nella discografia dei DM. "Condemnation" ci porta a un clima più rilassato, più intimista, canzone carina dove ancora una volta chi la fa da padrone è la voce di Dave. "In Your Room" è un'altra perla, molto oscura come nella migliore tradizione dei DM, anche qui tentare di descrivere cosa si prova ascoltandola è impresa vana, ognuno qui sente quello che vuole e viene trascinato dal mare di note che avvolgono l'ascoltatore. Dopo l'esplosione a livello mondiale c'è l'esplosione a livello umano di Dave, che nel periodo 1993-1997 tenta più volte il suicidio e rischia la vita a causa di un'overdose. Il periodo è dei più neri sotto il profilo umano mentre, paradossalmente, il successo mondiale porta i fan a chiedere un nuovo album. Nuovo album che arriva appunto nel 1997 e che segna la rinascita del gruppo e il ritorno a nuova vita (artistica e umana) di Dave Gahan. "Barrel Of A Gun" è molto coinvolgente, una batteria molto potente e una chitarra molto wah wah creano un tappeto sonoro dove Dave può ricominciare a fare quello che meglio sa fare: cantare."It's No Good" è un brano molto commerciale, molto melodico e sicuramente uno dei pezzi meglio riusciti nell'album. "Home" è un brano introdotto da una splendida parte di batteria dove si aggiunge la voce di Martin, un brano molto interessante con un finale che dire stupendo è dire poco: vale la pena ascoltarlo. L'ultimo singolo estratto da Ultra è "Useless" con un'intro molto rock: canzone molto coinvolgente che si distacca, e di molto, dalle canzoni anni '80 del gruppo inglese. La ripresa del cammino è affidata a un inedito presente nel disco "Only When I Lose Myself", molto oscura, con Dave che ripete all'infinito "it's only when i lose myself, i lose myself". Da segnalare anche la presenza di una stuggente "Little 15" e una versione live di "Everything Counts".
Questa raccolta fa dunque il punto di dodici anni vissuti pericolosamente, ma, come in tutte le belle favole, tutto sembra essersi risolto per il meglio. La band andrà avanti nel suo cammino pubblicando poi Exciter nel 2001 e Playing The Angel nel 2005. Lo consiglio a chi si avvicina per la prima volta alla band inglese.
