Reduce da un biennio ricco di impegni e soddisfazioni, la task-force capitanata da Mike Sifringer si prepara a tornare sul mercato con una missione importante: centrare nuovamente il bersaglio. In pochi anni la concorrenza si è moltiplicata e anche una big-band come Destruction, saldamente in testa negli indici di gradimento delle riviste specializzate, non può permettersi di mollare la presa. Nel 1986 la scena tedesca si è ormai imposta come antagonista principe dello strapotere americano, al punto che i Nostri non devono più guardare troppo lontano per riconoscere degni avversari. Con le retrovie che incalzano, la scalata del terzetto di Lörrach si trova a un crocevia importante, che non ammette incertezze.
Terza release ufficiale in tre anni, "Eternal Devastation" giustifica l'incedere cronometrico delle uscite a fronte di una qualità superba, che rafforza le gerarchie e attira nuovi sostenitori. Eccitato dall'odore della sfida, il combo teutonico cala l'asso che vale la consacrazione di una carriera, una dimostrazione d'intenti che acquista valore anche per le circostanze in cui è maturata. Se lo stile resta orgogliosamente incontaminato, gli interpreti dimostrano di aver acquisito una certa dimestichezza con lo strumento, indispensabile per reggere le trame sempre più articolate del repertorio; Sifringer si conferma indiscusso punto di forza del trio, anche in virtù di una classe innata come songwriter, ma l'impressione è quella di un collettivo più affiatato, compatto: lo dimostra la prestazione (finalmente) impeccabile di Marcel ‘Schmier' Schirmer, già all'opera con buoni risultati sul precedente Infernal Overkill.
L'incipit si muove tra suoni plumbei, mefistofelici, rimandando di qualche minuto l'assalto metallico di cui i Nostri sono fieri capiscuola. "Curse The Gods" riprende il discorso abbozzato da "Black Death" (commiato del precedente LP), puntando sulla varietà di tempi e schemi a favore di una certa dinamicità, solo intravista in precedenza: il risultato è uno dei brani più suggestivi e acclamati della band tedesca, che condensa in un tour-de-force da sei minuti il meglio della propria produzione; a distanza di quasi vent'anni, il riffing forsennato di Sifringer continua a mietere vittime, né hanno perso il proprio fascino i vocalizzi sguaiati del (fu) giovanissimo Schmier, due ingredienti insostituibili di un classico senza tempo.
Tralasciando la pur dignitosa "Confound Games", che forse soffre una posizione poco fortunata, la tracklist si dipana attraverso episodi di grande rilievo, confermando l'eccellenza dell'opener. La prolungata "Live Without Sense", che tradisce il desiderio di ricercare soluzioni più elaborate, e il capolavoro "Eternal Ban" (thrash-anthem con la delicatezza di un martello pneumatico) finiscono direttamente nella cerchia dei classici, ma note positive giungono anche dai raid chitarristici di "United By Hatred" e dalla sottovalutata "Confused Mind", che raddoppia l'overdose di velocità offerta da "Upcoming Devastation".
Il successo di Eternal Devastation vale l'accesso meritato al gotha dell'heavy metal tedesco, ma i Destruction non si ripeteranno più sugli stessi livelli. Dopo un EP accolto calorosamente dai fan ("Mad Butcher", contenente una curiosa cover dei Plasmatics), nel 1988 è il turno di "Release From Agony", primo full-length con una rimaneggiata formazione a quattro: un prodotto valido e tecnicamente ineccepibile, ma a conti fatti povero della carica intransigente che aveva alimentato i precedenti lavori; da qui al disastro (soprattutto commerciale) di "Cracked Brain", complice un chiacchierato split tra Sifringer e Schmier (per lui un futuro negli Headhunter), il passo è breve.
Il resto è storia recente, con molte luci e poche ombre.

I Destruction sono stati senza alcun dubbio "I Cattivi"!
Il colpo inferto risulta talmente dirompente da far perdonare alcune piccole assonanze di soluzioni che, non troppo raramente, fanno capolino tra un brano e l'altro.
