Non si compone mai con le proprie nevrosi. E considerando che Devin Townsend è notoriamente un soggetto alquanto bizzarro, costantemente tormentato dalle sue non meglio identificate paranoie psicotiche, potremmo descrivere i suoi lavori come delle personalissime catarsi. Quanto meno da un punto di vista oggettivo. Quello che invece si potrebbe cogliere con soggettiva percezione ascoltando quest’ album, non è purtroppo rappresentabile in poche righe.
Il canadese, che è cantante e chitarrista sopraffino, fu anche assoldato da Steve Vai per le registrazioni di “Sex And Religion”, solo in seguito riscuotendo consensi tra i metallers per i suoi violentissimi “Strapping Young Lad”.
“Ocean Machine” (1997, ma uscito nel 2000 in Italia) segna l’inizio del suo più felice momento artistico: da questo album in poi seguirà (parallelamente alle produzioni più heavy) anche una maggiore ricerca del suono e della melodia. “La macchina dell’oceano” è un componimento in alcuni momenti incalzante, come è ad esempio la splendida “Life”. In altri, sovrasta decisamente le percezioni di chi si fa trascinare dal suo sound, evocativo di immagini e ricordi di chissà quali viaggi, fisici e mentali. In pezzi come “Funeral”, si possono apprezzare arrangiamenti costruiti apposta su di un’ idea di perenne e monolitico movimento. Quello delle onde di un oceano, cui appunto si richiamano i riffoni d’apertura di “Funeral”, o le rotte tracciate dai bridges di “Voices In The Fan”. In “Greetings” aprono ancora le chitarre, traghettandoci con spregiudicatezza quasi “mozartiana” verso gli ariosi effetti dei ritornelli.
Personalmente trovo davvero personale e profonda l’interpretazione canora di “The Death Of Music” : episodio quasi chill-out che parte molto in sordina e che regala atmosfere quasi eteree. Il disco apre citando i versi di Alfred Tennyson, poeta inglese dell’ottocento (o almeno Google ha così sentenziato). Un “voce dall’abisso” recita i versi preludendo tempesta: "Oh Earth, what changes hast thou seen? There, where the long street roars Hath been the stillness of the sensual sea The hills are shadows And they flow from form to form And nothing stands like cloudsThat shape themselves and go". Cominciano a tuonare le chitarre di Devin. Il movimento descritto dalle ritmiche è lento e ondulatorio. Procede sempre più incalzante, ma mai filtrato da “stonerosi” effetti tipo “big muff”. Incedono poi i ritornelli, barlumi di luce fra le nubi addensate dal tappeto ritmico sopra descritto. Ed avanti così fino ai luminosi ritornelli della già citata “Life”. Potrei dilungarmi ancora, ma è inutile tentar d’abbozzare la descrizione d’un feeling così poco stereotipato.
Soffermandosi sui successivi capitoli di quella che oggi si chiama “Devin Townsend Band”, ci si accorge che il fascino delle atmosfere di questo cd rimangono quasi del tutto ineguagliate. Le successive releases contengono anch’ esse lampi di genio qui e là (tra l’ altro è appena stato pubblicato un nuovo album, “Synchestra” ), ma questo “Ocean Machine” è classificabile come vero masterpiece.
Forse non molto noto, Townsend meriterebbe un ascolto almeno da parte degli amanti del rock.
