Devin townsend rappresenta, dal mio personale punto di vista, il più grande artista che la scena musicale degli ultimi anni abbia avuto, in grado di creare veramente qualcosa di innovativo e di rompere definitivamente le barriere poste dai generi musicali. Classificare la sua musica è praticamente impossibile, Devin ha realizzato dal 1995 sino ad oggi una miriade di album, diversissimi tra loro,toccando qualsiasi genere musicale.
Da un ascolto superficiale la sua musica può essere classificata come Metal estremo se si tratta della sua band principale, gli Strapping young lad, o come progr/rock per i suoi progetti solisti, ma se si va ad analizzare attentamente la struttura di ogni brano con tutte le sue sfaccettature, di un qualunque progetto di Devin, si puo' intuire la genialità di quest'artista. Townsend non è un'artista da canzone di classifica (ed anche per questo non è mai riuscito ad ottenere il successo che merita), non lo potresti mai catalogare da un pezzo ascoltato per caso in un videoclip. Dei suoi progetti non è la canzone o il ritornello a rimanerti ma bensì l'album nella sua totalità ed ogni album è una sorta di viaggio tra atmosfere e sensazioni diverse. La poliedricità di quest'artista è espressa benissimo da questo "Physicist", uno dei suoi capolavori e tra i dischi più belli e innovativi degli ultimi anni, realizzato da Townsend nel 2000 dopo essersi riunito con gli stessi musicisti di "City" (secondo lavoro degli Strapping young lad del 1997).
"Physicist" è un'album violento e aggressivo ma allo stesso tempo melodico e riflessivo, rappresenta infatti la summa di tutto ciò che Devin aveva realizzato con i suoi progetti fino a quel momento. Il disco è in un certo qualsenso l'unione tra le atmosfere urbane di "City" e le melodie pop/rock del suo disco solista "Ocean's machine". All'ascolto si viene catapultati in una dimensione spaziale e onirica fatta di canzoni diversissime tra loro (si passa dallo speed/thrash, alla psicadelia, al death estremo fino a melodie pop) unite da una sorta di vortice che fa da tappeto a tutto il disco rendendolo omogeneo. L'opener "Namaste" è una vera mazzata alla nuca, quattro minuti di Thrash metal suonato alla velocità della luce, tra le migliori canzoni mai scritte da Devin. Con la successiva "Victim" invece si passa ad atmosfere cyber-thrash, con ritmiche serrate e cantato incazzatissimo. In "Material" e "Kingdom" si può notare invece il suo lato più melodico, per poi sfociare in "Death" che è un concentrato esplosivo di industrial/death/grind dei più micidiali. Da notare il drumming pazzesco e ai limiti dell'umano di Gene Hoglan, a mio parere il miglior batterista sulla faccia della terra.
Insomma un disco che consiglio a chiunque piace la musica particolare e fatta bene, al contrario sconsigliato a chi ascolta la musica con i paraorecchi e che segue questo o quel filone.
