Compattissima raccolta delle più banali, scontate, sempreverdi ma uniche "hit" di una certa band seminale americana.
Le perle del "piccolo dinosauro" sono dei gridi epocali che segnano indiscutibilmente l'ambient dei pazzi, degli intellettualoidi e perfino dei raveman di venticinque anni fa.
Gli stilemi sono imprevedibili e provocano inesorabilmente l'orecchio con nonchalance e scanzonate ballad. L'andamento barcollante, cieco, inconscio di Mascis e la caracollante, a volte, sezione ritmica sono del tutto disturbanti. Non si può non rimanere shockati davanti al surf/beat/mantra di "Freak Scene".
La compilation è datata 1991, ovvero il periodo fino a "Green Mind", potendo definirlo un "best of sbrigativo" visto che non si viene a conoscenza della sferzata amabile/odiabile di "Where You Been".
"Little Fury Things" è il primo amore per Mascis grazie a quella nebulosa acida in loop. Sono incisivi, cosa che manca ad alcune altre realtà.
La pazzia è testimoniata dal coverizzare i Cure di "Just Like Heaven", dove sul bridge buttano là anche un dolce growl, e Frampton con "Show Me The Way". Il fatto è che hanno un tocco così originale che riescono a coinvolgoere appena fanno partire i watt.
Mentre risfoglio queste gemme lo-fi, mi domando: "ma quanto cazzo è stato importante "Nello Giovane"?
"Throw Down" e "In A Jar" mi fa riassaporare questo tramonto immaginando una guardinga distesa americana di coyoti. Ma è solo un deja vu, un miraggio, perchè "Chuncks" mi fa tamponare con un'affannosa respirazione, e preferisco spegnere lo stereo della mente.
