Questa è stata, in sintesi, la mia reazione quando ho visto che nel sito mancava una recensione, un accenno, a Doro Pesch. Conosciuta ai più per aver fatto parte della band heavy metal Warlock, la figura della cantante tedesca è sempre stata riconosciuta come una delle voci femminili più acclamate e riconosciute del genere metal, genere nel quale inutile dirlo, ha sempre dominato la figura maschile. Inizia la sua carriera con i Warlock dicevamo, e nel giro di quattro anni la band pubblica quattro album, fra i quali spiccano il bellissimo debut "Burning The Wtiches" e il loro miglior lavoro "Triumph And Agony". Va fatto notare comunque, che a differenza di moltissimi gruppi tedeschi attivi all'epoca, gli Warlock non hanno mai virato sul genere speed o power, anzi, si sono caratterizzati con un suono che andava molto vicino alle melodie di tipico stampo americano, e questo è forse uno dei motivi per i quali in Germania la band non arrivò mai a farsi conoscere molto.
"Triumph And Agony", pubblicato rispettivamente nel 1987, segna lo scioglimento definitivo del gruppo, che era già nell'aria dopo la pubblicazione della precedente release "True As Steel", scioglimento che fu dettato anche per l'interesse della Vertigo Records vero Doro, e il totale disinteressamento verso gli altri membri. Questo porterà Doro verso quella che sarà una prolifica carriera solista, che inizierà due anni dopo nel 1989 con la pubblicazione di "Force Majure" prima, e l'omonimo "Doro" nel 1990.
Nel 1991 viene pubblicato "True At Heart", che già dal titolo esprime richiami molto forti verso il suo passato con la sua precedente band. Il disco si apre con alcuni pezzi veramente ottimi, come "Even Angels Cry" e la bellissima "The Fortuneteller", dove Doro si alterna in parti narrate e cantante nel narrare la storia di un uomo che va alla ricerca del suo amore attraverso la lettura della mano effettuata da una zingara. Troppi forse sono i lenti in cui Doro ammalia l'ascoltatore con al sua voce, e che alla fine risultano in parte noiosi come "Gettin' Nowhere Without You" e "You Gonna Break My Heart", mentre riescono alla perfezione le canzoni più aggressive in cui la cantante tedesca riesce a dare il meglio di lei, specialmente in "Live It", "Heartshaped Tattoo", e la spiazzante opener "Cool Love". Una ballad degna di questo nome, nel senso che non riesce ad annoiare, va cercata nel finale del disco con "I Know You By Heart", dove Doro canta su tonalità particolarmente basse, accompagnata da una leggera batteria e accordi di chitarra che riescono a dare alla canzone un'atmosfera sensuale e misteriosa.
La carriera di Doro è vastissima, e tutta piena di episodi riuscitissimi a mio parere, ma questo "True At Heart" riesce a colpire in maniera netta l'ascoltatore grazie alla voce calda di Doro, e ad una produzione che risulta praticamente perfetta. Non sarà certo uno di quegli album che vengono definiti dei pilastri del genere, risulterà statico in alcune parti, ma diamine, nessuno è perfetto, no? Forse troppo poco conosciuta, Doro merita di essere ascoltata, anche se per poco tempo, solo per cercare di capire la magia che risiede nella sua voce, che rapisce l'ascoltatore, e che alla fine riesce a conquistare.
