Un anno dopo il debutto “Nothing But Death Remains” del 1991, un disco che definirei tutt’altro che entusiasmante pur non essendo un brutto lavoro, Dan Swanö, nota figura della scena death metal svedese impegnata in più gruppi e progetti sia come musicista che come produttore, porta i suoi Edge of Sanity alla realizzazione del secondo album intitolato “Unorthodox”.
Fin dalle prime note dell’intro “The Unorthodox” si percepisce subito che qualcosa è cambiato rispetto al passato ed ogni dubbio svanisce quando inizia la monumentale “Enigma”, suddivisa a sua volta nelle tre parti “The Blessing”, “Celestial Dissension” e “The Loss of Hallowed Life”, una piccola “Crimson” in miniatura nella quale per sette minuti emerge tutta la personalità del gruppo che finalmente ha trovato un proprio stile personale pur rimando fedele alle chitarre zanzarose ed ai ritmi infernali che hanno fatto la fortuna del death metal svedese. Nel ritornello tra l’altro Swanö rinuncia per la prima volta al suo growl da vero orso polare in calore, il miglior ringhio death metal in assoluto per chi scrive, a favore della sua voce pulita con la quale riesce a trasmettere il giusto senso di solennità ed ottenendo come risultato una delle migliori canzoni del gruppo, tanto che il paragone con “Crimson” è più che giustificato, pur nelle dovute proporzioni, ed “Enigma” può esserne quindi considerata un’interessante anticipazione.
Se il resto del disco fosse sul livello di questa canzone ci troveremmo di fronte ad un autentico capolavoro, però vicino ad altre tracce notevoli come “Everlasting (Epidemic Reign Part III), “After Afterlife” e “A Curfew for the Damned (… Blind Belief)” ve ne sono altre un po’ meno convincenti per un totale di quattordici canzoni che portano la durata dell’album a circa sessanta minuti, veramente troppi per un lavoro di questo genere. Con qualche taglio qua e là, riducendo così di una ventina di minuti la sua lunghezza, “Unorthodox” avrebbe potuto essere l’album perfetto per testimoniare la grandezza del gruppo nel suo periodo old school, quando le sue due anime, quella più intransigente e tradizionalista del chitarrista Andreas Axellsson e quella più aperta alle sperimentazioni del cantane Dan Swanö, erano ancora unite e indissolute, visto che già dal successivo “The Spectral Sorrows” si inizieranno ad esprimere in maniera indipendente. Purtroppo però l’eccessiva lunghezza penalizza il risultato e la prima fase di carriera degli Edge of Sanity è condannata a rimanere nell’ombra di ciò che hanno realizzato in seguito.
