Interessante raccolta uscita nel 1996 che ripesca efficacemente il primo periodo glorioso della band (1971-1973).
Jeff Lynne, Ron Wood e Bev Bevan, dopo aver conquistato notorietà con il beat intelligente dei Move, si cimentano in un genere ancora più colto. Ovvero quella smania di inizio anni Settanta di proporre rock, folk e rimandi di musica classica. Loro propongono un sound titanico, a volte anche torvo, cupo, grazie a quell'uso fantastico del violoncello, corno francese, oboe e clarietto.
Prima della svolta disco music del 1975 con "Face The Music", sempre caratterizzata da stilemi sopraffini e di alto spessore ("Evil Woman", "Sweet Talking Woman", "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" e "Telephone Line"..mica i Bee Gees di "Night Fever"..), si esordisce con la stravaganza dei primi tre lavori.
Il primo, di sicuro il più bello e il più completo, non fa inquadrare la band con nessun altro paragone.
Non sono nè i Gentle Giant, nè i Procol Harum e nemmeno i Moody Blues più intrinseci. E' una vera orchestra danzante su melodie roboanti, vertiginose, che mira sempre ad un impatto diretto con l'orecchio, senza distoglielo con mille ghirigori.
"10538 Overture" è il loro capolavoro insuperato. Nemmeno le hit successive o "Eldorado", ultima scia progressive, riusciranno ad avere un'idea così fresca. Un riff iniziale storico, un attacco da pelle d'oca ed il resto della composizione che è un continuo sali e scendi. Melodia scolpita dal tonante corno francese e da un tessuto ritmico pregno di arie di violini e violoncelli. John Lennon perfino si dimostrò particolarmente entusiasta e colpito dagli ELO..
"Mr. Radio" è l'altra chicca del primo lavoro. Veniamo sempre di più stupiti dal flash che la band ha avuto dai Beatles (che già si vedeva bene con i Move..) e dall'abilità nel riproporre nel loro stile personale i vari barocchismi Sixties inglesi. La teatralità pittoresca degli strumenti classici e l'orecchiabilità fresca delle linee vocali creano un effetto magico.
Prettamente sinfoniche sono "Manhatten Rumble" e "In Old England Town". La prima è strumentale e crea una cupa sospensione misteriosa, la seconda è un "boogie orchestrale", colossale nel suo incedere e impreziosita dalla voce filtrata di Lynne (fa parte del secondo disco dove già non c'era più Wood). Poi troviamo un pò di rock'n'roll con la celebre rivisitazione di "Roll Over Beethoven", stravolta da innesti sfarzosi, e con "My Woman" (la prima versione di "Ma Ma Belle").
L'oscura "Queen Of The Hous" è l'esempio della stralunata e soffusa voce di Jeff sempre in perfetto connubio con il possente tessuto ritmico. "Showdown" propone un timido inizio dei lidi successivi della band. Basso funky, cori eccelsi..insomma un suadente disegno di alto "pop" fuso con i colti barocchismi. Niente di più elegante.
"First Movement" porta la firma di Wood ed è un altro strumentale che dà voce a chitarre classiche e balletti gioiosi. Stesso autore che sforna "Whisper In The Night", dotata di una tristezza struggente, quasi un inno alla luna. "Momma" è posta come ultimo brano della "Gold Collection" e troviamo le prime smielate carezze sonore del combo.
Il primo periodo, per chi sdegna o sottovaluta "Last Train To London", è assolutamente da prendere in considerazione, rendendo giustizia così ad una band che aveva molto di più da dire rispetto ai Supertramp.
