Potrei finire col dire che questo è un capolavoro, o potrei iniziare tessendone le lodi. Si perchè High Society è un album struggente, dolce, sensuale, romantico e autoironico al tempo stesso.  Si passa dal rock melodico di “Old Domion” alla ballata fuori dal tempo di “Count Sheep”, dove vorresti piangere ma anche il testo te lo impedisce. La vocina a 8-bit di Toko Yasuda domina il groove di “In This City” in un contorcersi di voci che collidono su dolci pastelli synth. Poi arriva un po’ sbruffone un po’ college rock “Window Display” a fare da preludio al trip tribale di “Native Numb”, dove si mischia l’arabo al lounge. “Leave It to Rust” è un pop rock alieno fatto di sguardi che non osservano e prese il fondello che ritornano vibranti nel caramel pop di “Disposable Parts”.

“Sold” è una splendida salita su un roller coaster di sensazioni fresche come i suoi tappeti synth. Lucenti caramelle che non durano molto, come “Shoulder”, una sciorinata decadente al ritmo di un basso sensuale. “Pleasure and Priviledge” è scheggia acida e mistificatoria dove la batteria prende vita da sé e domina tinte qua fosche qua euforiche. Poi un gioiello di rara fattura “Natural Disasters” implode nello stereo con la chitarra che sembra un violino, con gli stacchi psichedelici dai flauti venusiani ci parla di conversazioni che non finiscono mai di emozioni da non provare di cene vetuste trite e ritrite. “Carbonation” è un divertissment da gustare con un martini dry. “Salty” è un rincorrersi abulico di parole che inscenano un japrock esplosivo.

“High Society” è una struggente poesia che ricerca in noi il gusto del bello, del raffinato, come la tromba smorzata che sembra chiederci ma chi siamo noi? Dove si nascondono i nostri dandy? Quali sono i nostri valori? Finchè un giorno entrerà una donna nelle vostre vite ad illuminare tutti gli angoli bui della terra. L’ultima “Diamond Raft” è un addio un po’ sgonfio e stanco a quello che è stato un viaggio sinceramente emozionante.

Sono dischi come questi che ci dicono sappiatevi volervi bene. Ed io torno a contare pecore.
