Nel momento in cui ho sentito la prima canzone di questo cd ho subito intuito che questo disco sarebbe stato molto differente da come me lo ero immaginato, infatti questo "Iron" evidenzia la parte più melodica e celtica degli Ensiferum, e anche per questo si differenzia dal loro debutto "Ensiferum", disco molto più aggressivo.
La prima traccia "Ferrum Aeternum" è una ballad celtica strumentale, molto orecchiabile e ben costruita. Dalla seconda traccia, ovvero la title-track "Iron" si comprende il cambiamento di sound avvenuto, la canzone infatti si dimostra molto più vuota (come tutto il disco) rispetto alle track dell'album precedente, privata infatti dei cori nel ritornello non si dimostra all'altezza delle aspettative. Come avrete capito infatti in tutto l'album manca quella parte canoro-melodica (cori e melodie orecchiabili) che facevano di questo gruppo uno tra i migliori nel genere viking-folk. Arriviamo dunque alla terza track, "Sword Chant" che come la precedente pur essendo una buona track non arriva mai al culmine della bellezza poichè non ha una parte principale totalmente orecchiabile anche se i riff di chitarra di markus toivonen si dimostrano ottimi dal punto di vista tecnico.
La quarta "Mourning heart" è l'introduzione melodica della quinta track "Tale of Revenge". Quest'ultima è la vera e propria hit dell'album con melodie orecchiabili e un buon ritornello in cui Petri Lindroos dimostra che le sue qualità vocali gli permettono di passare dal growl alla voce pulita (molto azzeccato il ritornello). La seguente "Lost in Despair" è una buona song che inizia con una melodia che sfocia in un lento riff di chitarra elettrica, niente più, buona ballad comunque. "Slayer of Light" è la traccia più aggressiva e diretta dell'album, inizia con un potente riff che dopo poco viene accompagnato da chitarre e scream, la canzone nel complesso è buona (bel chorus) ma non è originalissima.
"Into the battle" è la traccia più epica, inizia con un coro che poco dopo viene accompagnato da un ottimo riff che fa da intro al pezzo (tiratissimo). La batteria come sempre veloce e dinamica fa da base alle chitarre che ci portano fino a un ritornello molto bello, peccato che non sia cantato in coro. La successiva "Lai Lai hei" è secondo me la traccia che più ci potevamo aspettare dai primi ensiferum, segue infatti la strada presa nel primo cd, per questo per me è anche la migliore: il chorus cantato in coro mi fa rimpiangere quel capolavoro di "Ensiferum".
Eccoci giunti alla conclusione del cd con la sorpresa finale, "Tears", la ballad in questione è infatti cantata da un'ottima voce femminile accompagnata da melodie dolci e forse anche troppo mielose per gli Ensiferum.
Questo cd lascia un pò di amaro in bocca, in confronto al debut-album, "Iron" è più complesso e richiede più ascolti per essere apprezzato in pieno... Tutto sommato un buon album che però non riesce a raggiungere la bellezza che tutti speravano dopo uno stupendo debutto.
