Genere: Symphonic Metal
Sono passati 2 anni dalla pubblicazione dell’ottimo debut "The Phantom Agony" e già ci sono novità in casa Epica: Inanzitutto nel nuovo album manca quel mood oscuro che aleggiava nel primo album, inoltre il gruppo ha deciso di enfatizzare l’aspetto corale e sinfonico della propria musica, rendendola simile ad una colonna sonora, anche se con pezzi molto (troppo) orecchiabili, rinunciando a quei momenti di tensione che rendevano speciale ed emozionante il primo album. Inoltre la componente metal è stata ancor di più ridimensionata. Una pessima scelta. Infatti il cd non mi emoziona in tutta la sua interezza e i pezzi sono così catchy da compromettere la longevità del prodotto.
Però bisogna ammettere che la produzione è da brividi e Simone, incerta nel debut nella maniera di cantare, è notevolemente migliorata. Il mio giudizio è assolutamente personale,molti ameranno (giustamente) il cd per le stesse ragioni per cui io non lo amo.
Il cd si apre con un intro sinfonica "Hunab K'u (a new age dawns prologue)" per poi proseguire con "Dance of Fate" un pezzo perfetto tecnicamente ma che lascia indifferente l’ascoltatore. Marcate le influenze ai Nightwish. "The Last Crusade (a new age dawns #1)" è un pezzo fin troppo orecchiabile, infarcitissimo di cori e orchestrazioni senza mai optare un cambio di tempo…"Solitary Ground" è la classica ballad sinfonica degli Epica (nonché primo singolo), molto catchy ma dopotutto carina. La prima parte di "Black Infinity" è troppo simile ad altri passaggi del cd, dove la fanno da padrone tantissimi cori. Il finale però è molto convincente. Peccato per l’inizio. "Force of The Shore" è un bellissimo pezzo dove abbiamo cambi di tempo e la tensione mantenuta per tutto l’arco del pezzo, anche grazie alle chitarre (finalmente!) e al growl di Mark (non eccelso a dire la verità). Da brividi l’intermezzo dove finalmente gli archi sono usati a dovere (forse mi piace tanto perché mi ricorda gli After Forever di "Decipher"). "Quietus" inizia con un intro molto folk dal sapore celtico (se pensate ai Within Temptation di "Monther Earth" avete indovinato). È un pezzo molto melodico ma molto coinvolgente. "Mother of Light (a new age dawns #1)" è il solito pezzo degli Epica. Da notare il cantato di Simon che si sposta da fraseggi lirici ad altri (perchè no?) pop.
"Trois Vierges" è la seconda ballad del cd ed è nettamente inferiore a "Solitary Ground" perché è davvero troppo manieristica, non dona all’ascoltatore nessuna emozione nonostante l’ausilio di Khan dei Kamelot, una delle voci migliori del panorama metal (nonostante i kamelot non producano dei capolavori). "Another Me In Lack'ech" è un altro pezzo che lascia totalmente indifferente, mentre il cd si chiude con la mini suite del cd, ovvero la title track, dove si abbandonano parti orecchiabili per regalare un mix degli elementi migliori del gruppo olandese.
Il mio giudizio è più che sufficiente anche se mi aspettavo molto di più dalla band. Non fidatevi di questa mia recensione perché rimane un opinione personale: sono sicura che questo secondo capitolo della saga degli olandesi a molti piacerà (e anche molto).

Dopo lo strepitoso successo del primo album, gli Epica sfornano un nuovo capolavoro del metal sinfonico neoclassico.
Per chiudere un album come questo era necessario trovare una canzone molto lunga ed epica... gli Epica ci sono riusciti di nuovo!
