Ormai è da un po' di tempo che a tutti gli amanti di questa band è giunta, disgraziatamente, una notizia che ha provocato un immenso dispiacere. Simone Simons, leader indiscussa e affascinante della band symphonic metal olandese, ha dovuto affrontare a partire dall'anno scorso e precisamente dopo aver concluso la registrazione dell'ultimo album problemi seri derivanti, inaspettatamente, dalla propria salute. Giustamente la band si è trovata costretta a saltare gran parte del tour che, dopo un album di questo calibro, li avrebbe, quasi per certo, spianato la strada verso la gloria.
E così ciò che è dispiaciuto soprattutto ai fan è stato il non aver avuto modo di assistere di persona a quella maturazione compositiva e tecnica alla quale son stati capaci di arrivare e che i critici non facevano altro, in quel periodo, che ribadirlo nelle varie loro recensioni. Sembrerà strano ma, a differenza, di tanti altri album symphonic che ho avuto modo di ascoltare tra il 2006 ed il 2008 quest'ultimo, nonostante sia stato trascurato da parecchi, ha avuto in serbo quel qualcosa che sicuramente noi non ci saremmo mai aspettati da questa band. Il metallo sinfonico olandese di cui si son avvalsi in questi anni, ha fatto sì da permettere loro di riuscire perlomeno a realizzare lavori discreti e per i quali, non dimentichiamo, si son distinti meravigliosamente nelle loro grintose esibizioni live (simili se non addirittura migliori ai nuovi Nightwish).
Invece, con questo lavoro ci troviamo di fronte ad un'originalità inaspettata e senza precedenti che è derivata, a maggior ragione, dal miglioramento tecnico/compositivo di ogni singolo membro della band, a partire dalla stessa Simone che in "Chasing the dragon" mostra, specialmente in alcuni parti specifiche, delle qualità vocali fuori dal comune e che ha potuto ottenere grazie all'aiuto degli stessi musicisti e soprattutto grazie ai suoi tantissimi anni di lavoro duro ed impegno costante (rimane, senza ombra di dubbio, una delle migliori voci di sesso femminile di tutto il panorama metal). Fondamentali son state le tastiere dalle sinfonie ora tenebrose ora rilassanti, i riff taglienti di chitarre epiche ed i seguenti "puntuali" bassi che hanno contribuito all'inserimento di ritornelli raffinati e dai contorni molto eleganti e suggestivi. Dobbiamo attribuire sempre a costoro un altro merito del quale si possono vantare senza troppe indiscrezioni. Essi, invece, di soffermarsi sui criteri predefiniti e d'obbligo del metallo sinfonico hanno saputo innescare e conseguentemente aggiungere in alcune canzoni, vale per "The obsessive devotion", apocalittiche commistioni di power e symphonic che non ha fatto altro che rendere il tutto così emozionante e piacevole. Potrei sembrare di parte, ma in effetti non lo sono, poiché apprezzo questa band che ha sempre messo da parte quei fattori, quali egocentricità e modestia, che non fanno altro che portare rendere un determinato gruppo od un'opera, commerciale sotto tutti i punti di vista. Con canzoni come "Death of a dream", "Never Enough", "The divine conspiracy" che son state partorite ed inserite così meravigliosamente nell'ultimo album, gli Epica si son imposti con una buona dose di disinvoltura e di elasticità sperimentale nel così vasto mondo metal.
L'unico immenso dispiacere deriva dal fatto che gli olandesi, dopo aver sfornato un'opera di questo livello, avrebbero potuto fare davvero bene in concerto. Tuttavia, gli Epica, dopo questi sforzi che purtroppo nel 2007 non hanno potuto dimostrare in chiave live, possono essere soddisfatti di una notizia che è giunta loro ed ai fan da poco tempo: Simone Simons sta bene e presto potrà ritornare ad esibirsi. Ora toccherà alla band prendere opportuni provvedimenti affinchè facciano vedere finalmente alla gente le loro soavi potenzialità compositive. Senza la Simons, gli Epica, secondo il mio punto di vista, avrebbero dovuto prendere un'unica nonché sacra decisione: cambiare nome alla band senza troppi ripensamenti o sciogliersi definitivamente. L'epicità di questa band è data proprio da lei, dalla Simons, dalla deliziosa mezzo-soprano olandese che, attraverso la sua energia e la sua raffinatezza, ha reso, attualmente, la sua band come una delle più importanti realtà, a livello internazionale, nel così meraviglioso e vasto panorama metal.
