Il botto vero e proprio ancora non lo hanno fatto. Ottimi album, altri meno riusciti, ma nel complesso il lavoro musicale degli Evergrey si potrebbe definire certamente positivo. Un cammino che iniziò prima con la formazione nell'ormai lontano 1995 e poi con la pubblicazione tre anni dopo del primo full lenght della loro carriera: intitolato "The dark discovery", esso si presenta come il lavoro più "underground" della band, condizionato da un'esperienza ancora da coltivare e da una registrazione scarsa, dovuta anche alla pochezza di una piccola etichetta come la Gothenburg Noiseworks.
Quello degli Evergrey è un power/progressive/gothic dalle sfumature molteplici ma pur sempre orientate verso una trama oscura, che mai si avvicina all'happy spensierato di Gamma Ray e Freedom Call. In particolare in questo primo platter, c'è una massiccia presenza di chitarre che si reggono sul duo Bronell/Englund: quest'ultimo, già fondatore del gruppo, è anche l'unico membro della band rimasto dall'uscita di "The dark discovery", ormai diventato leader indiscusso. Nonostante la sua voce non sia quella che possiamo ascoltare oggigiorno (l'ugola di Englund è migliorata notevolmente rispetto agli inizi), il buon Tom dimostra fin da questo esordio la sue doti vocali e di songwriting, prendendosi sulle spalle gran parte del lavoro presente nel cd.
Al di là quindi di inesperienza e di una registrazione non certo esaltante, il primo album in studio dei cinque svedesi riesce comunque a colpire il bersaglio. Pezzi terremotanti ed allo stesso tempo melodici come "Trust and betrayal" e "When the river calls" si alternano con altri più pragmatici nella loro evoluzione: spiccano "Closed eyes" e "For every tear that falls" dove la band mette in mostra anche il gusto più ricercato per melodia e passaggi sognanti, facendo già intravedere le caratteristiche "atmosferiche" che saranno poi ulteriormente amplificate nei lavori successivi.
Capisco l'ormai dilagante pregiudizio di coloro che si accostano a questo tipo di musica: tutta uguale, testi con draghi e principesse e cose di questo tipo (non che siano sbagliate, anzi). Detto ciò ci sono delle realtà nel genere che vanno approfondite, soprattutto per il lavoro e la capacità di emergere che hanno dimostrato nel corso degli anni; gli Evergrey sono una band che ha saputo eleborare un credo musicale personale e diversificato e per questo meritano almeno qualche ascolto.
