“Introduce Yourself” poteva sembrare già un punto d’arrivo per i Faith No More. Ma l’entrata di Mike Patton nel gruppo rivoluzionò gli equilibri del gruppo.
Tutto il carisma del nuovo cantante esplode nelle 11 tracce di “The Real Thing” che non migliora il suono della band, ma semplicemente lo rende più appetibile. Questo fatto non è di secondaria importanza, visto nell’ottica della popolarità del Crossover. Brani come “Epic” sono fondamentali nell’evoluzione del genere; non per particolari qualità, ma perché esemplificano una formula. In questo caso è un semplice rap furioso ed un ritornello maestoso, che sono tuttavia inseriti in una cornice musicale entusiasmante; ritmica irresistibile, linee di basso in evidenza, grande atmosfera, tastiere e chitarre all’unisono, impeto senza pari ed addirittura il finale pianistico.
La traccia d’apertura è “From Out Of Nowhere”; la partenza è sfrenata. Siamo di fronte a qualcosa di profondamente diverso, per intenzione, al disco precedente. Se prima si voleva colpire e stordire, adesso la band sembra finalizzata ad ammaliare ed affascinare. Le chitarre a pioggia iniziali la dicono lunga su questo; effetti di synth, melodia impeccabile, ritornello dilatato. I contenuti ci sono, cambia solo la forma. I Faith No More si possono permettere molto più di quanto pensassero con Patton e ci regalano in sostanza brani rock impeccabili; sarà mainstream, mancherà l’originalità, ma la qualità si attesta a livelli straordinari. “Falling To Pieces” non fa altro che rafforzare quest’idea perché è in fondo una rock ballad moderna, dove la malinconia si intravede soltanto, ben camuffata dai toni epici e dai ritmi trascinanti.
Con “Surprise! You´re Dead!” troviamo qualcosa di diverso; si passa con disinvoltura dalle influenza hardcore a quelle metal. Un Patton eccelso fa gran parte del lavoro, lanciandosi in un canto rabbioso e stupendo, completato dal riff di chitarra molto veemente. Il tutto impacchettato in una confezione standard di rock alternativo, che si fa anche troppo evidente con “Zombie Eaters”; va bene che il nuovo cantante è un portento, ma qui forse forzano un po’ troppo la mano. Nonostante sia un brano perfettamente composto, risulta un po’ artificioso. Il cambio di ritmo è abbastanza banale. Niente di veramente brutto, soltanto un calo di originalità.
Si prosegue su livelli discreti con la title track, un continuo evolversi, attraverso i vari timbri vocali di Patton ed i ritmi diversificati. Si rintracciano qui le origini del nu metal, fatto che può essere positivo o meno. “Underworld Love” è un piacevole calo di tensione che ci porta alla notevole “The Morning After”, commistione straniante di atmosfere intense, canto intenso e ritmo coinvolgente.
Un’altra gemma è “Woodpecker From Mars”; un violino arabeggiante che si incide sul basso grezzo dando vita a qualcosa di unico. Una cavalcata nel deserto con un sole caldissimo che ci brucia la pelle. “War Pigs” è l’ennesima prova eccellente di Patton, che in questo album fa davvero miracoli, ravvivando anche i brani meno interessanti. La conclusione è atipica; la stupenda serenata “Edge Of The World”, dimostrazione di come i Faith No More viaggino su binari trasversali, anche grazie a Patton che, tanto per cambiare, qui mette l’anima.
“The Real Thing” è insomma un lavoro più accessibile del suo predecessore; non raggiunge la sua qualità a causa di alcune piccole imperfezioni e momenti che rasentano la noia. Resta tuttavia innegabile la bellezza di queste canzoni, che sanno affascinare immediatamente, senza rinunciare alla loro anima più inferocita.
