"Pushing The Senses" è il quinto studio-album dei Feeder.
Il frontman dei gallesi Grant Nicholas ritiene questo lavoro il seguito, non solo effettivo, ma anche ideale del precedente (e bellissimo) "Comfort In Sound". Coerenza a livello musicale e lirico, quindi, è la parola d'ordine per questo nuovo full lenght.
I produttori scelti per assemblare il disco sono ben tre; lo stesso Grant, il gettonato Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters) e Ken Nelson (Coldplay), quest'ultimo coinvolto però solo nella splendida piano ballad "Frequency".
E' comunque il disco della definitiva consacrazione dei Feeder, con un bel numero due nella U.K. chart ed un buon numero undici nella classifica generale europea durante la settimana d'uscita, oltre ad alcune date di supporto durante il "Vertigo Tour" degli U2 e la conquista del titolo di headliners al "Download" Festival.
Affermazione comunque meritata, c'è da dire: non mancano certo, infatti, gli emozionanti saliscendi melodici ormai marchio di fabbrica dei Feeder, perlomeno nella seconda parte della loro decennale carriera. Basti pensare alla splendida opener "Feeling A Moment", ballata elettrica di una bellezza abbagliante estratta come (fortunato) secondo singolo, o ad un gioiello come "Tumble And Fall", che ha anticipato l'uscita dell'album (Fran Healy dei Travis è gradita presenza ai cori). Le canzoni più intense ed emotive raggiungono in questo lavoro vette emozionali notevoli; la voce di Grant, a differenza dei primi lavori, è delicata e soave, ed impreziosisce grandi scorci melodici come la lennoniana "Tender", le evocative "Pain On Pain" e "Dove Gray Sands" (posta in chiusura), oltre alla dilatata "Morning Life", quest'ultima forse la traccia migliore dell'opera. Per non far preoccupare i fans della prima ora, non mancano chitarre abrasive e taglienti, abbondantemente presenti in "Bitter Glass" (dichiaratamente ispirata ai Talking Heads) e "Pilgrim Soul", quest'ultima incredibilmente potente e sferzante. La titletrack, paradossalmente, appare forse come l'episodio più debole del disco, anche se mantiene coordinate particolarmente rockeggianti.
C'è da dire che le liriche arricchiscono notevolmente il grande lavoro fatto sulle melodie: non regna certo l'allegria ("How do you feel when there's no sun /How do you feel when rain drops come pouring down again /How do you feel when there's no one? /Am I just like you?", da "Feeling A Moment"), e chiaramente le vacanze a Majorca di "Seven Days In The Sun" sono un lontanissimo ricordo, ma l'incisività espressiva di ogni singolo pezzo è veramente ammirevole.
Un lavoro non di certo sperimentale ed innovativo, né tantomeno spensierato ed estivo, ma indiscutibilmente emozionante e completo in ogni sua parte. Un disco che conferma la classe dei Feeder nel costruire melodie di una bellezza non comune, e che li candida di diritto ad entrare nel gotha del pop-rock europeo.
