Un bell'inganno.
Le prime note di questo disco mi hanno fatto pensare che avrei ascoltato la solita cantautrice che ripercorre strade già attraversate migliaia di altre volte da tantissimi musicisti prima di lei. Una bella voce chiara, delicata e sottile, una melodia dolce e orecchiabile, arrangiamenti scarni, una chitarra acustica, ritmica lieve, registrazione leggermente sporca per darsi un tono. Carino, sì davvero carino, ma già sentito. Clichè abusati fino al parossismo, penso tra me e me. Mentre immagino un ascolto monocorde e banale, un film già visto, vengo puntualmente smentito canzone dopo canzone. Già al secondo brano le atmosfere che aprono il disco si allontanano. L'amara dolcezza iniziale diventa leggerezza e si avvertono arrangiamenti più accurati. Feist scopre pian piano le sue carte, che consistono in una ricercatezza stilistica variopinta di tanti colori diversi, in un collage che sembra avere il tratto della casualità. La prima impressione, quindi, è un mezzo inganno, perchè la caratteristica di "Let it die" è proprio la varietà, che viene sviluppata mostrando sempre una leggerezza sincera e tutto sommato gradevole. Infatti, in undici canzoni, di cui sei cover, questa cantante canadese riesce a spaziare dal folk, al soul, alla canzone francese, fino addirittura alla disco music degli anni '70.
Il disco rispecchia probabilmente la personalità multiforme della cantante, che nella sua breve storia artistica ha già collezionato una serie importante di collaborazioni apparentemente incoerenti. Ha iniziato la sua carriera aprendo i concerti dei Ramones, è stata la vocalist dei Broken Social Scene e Placebo, ha duettato prima con i Kings of Convenience, quindi con Jane Birkin e vanta collaborazioni con Peaches i By Divine Right. Insomma, Leslie Feist dà l'idea di essere uno zelig della musica pop. Eppure in tutta questa disomogeneità il disco trova un filo conduttore nella voce di questa cantante che ci accompagna soavemente dall'inizio alla fine. E' un disco carino, a momenti intrigante, con alcune gemme, ma penso che Feist possa fare di meglio. Ho idea che potrà diventare una bella sorpresa. Da seguire con attenzione.
