Uh-oh! Ci fanno notare che questa recensione compare anche (tutta o in parte) su "100 Dischi Ideali Per Capire Il Rock" di Ezio Guiatamacchi
"Rumours" è diventato uno dei ‘casi' più clamorosi della storia del rock. Il suo ciclo di vita continua ancora oggi, a 30 anni dalla sua pubblicazione. L'album fu pubblicato il 4 febbraio del 1977.
Ma quale può essere il segreto di questo successo epocale? I fatti sono noti e si è certamente trattato di qualcosa di più di semplici rumours, cioè ‘voci'. La band era composta da Lindsey Buckingham chitarra e voce, Stenie Nicks voce, Mick Fleetwood alla batteria, Christine Mc Vie alle tastiere e John Mc Vie bassista. In quel periodo stava avvenendo la separazione contemporanea delle due coppie del gruppo, John e Christine più Stevie e Lindsay che insieme formavano i quattro quinti della band. Lo stesso Mick non era esente da questi travagli amorosi, infatti in quel periodo lui e sua moglie Jenny stavano per divorziare. Si sa che le tensioni provocano adrenalina e forti emozioni nella creatività degli artisti coinvolti.
Per registrare il nuovo album, la band dopo un tour di quasi sei mesi, si era recata nel febbraio del 1976 nel nord della California, a Sausalito, pochi chilometri a nord di San Francisco, proprio oltre il Golden Gate Bridge. Lì, nei Record Plant Studios, si consumavano autentiche tempeste passionali. Tutti i componenti del gruppo concordano sul fatto che queste situazioni abbiano contribuito in maniera decisiva alla registrazione del disco. John Mc Vie ammise che la musica gli ha dato una mano a non pensare ai suoi problemi privati. Lavorare in quelle condizioni era un vero manicomio. Furono giorni difficili per la band, ma la musica e il suono dell'album erano davvero grandi.
Apre l'album l'autobiografica ‘'Second Hand News'', firmata da Buckingham ed esplicitamente ispirata al travaglio sentimentale tra lui e Stevie. Il pezzo, un motivetto divertente scandito dal riff della 12 corde acustica, raccoglie lo spirito dei Fleetwood Mac e l'esuberante musicalità di Buckingham. ‘'Dreams'' è più sognante e non rinuncia a tracciatine sentimentali. Questa canzone incorpora il sound più melodico dei Fleetwood . ‘'Never Going Back Again'' è uno dei migliori momenti del disco dal punto di vista musicale. Si sviluppa su una melodia con echi medievali che ricordano il sound del folk-rock inglese. ‘'Don't Stop'' è uno dei brani manifesto di Rumours. Positiva, ritmata, la canzone ha una visione ottimistica del futuro e incita a riflettere sul fatto di ‘'non smettere di pensare al domani \ il passato se ne è andato e il domani sarà presto qui, meglio di prima''.
‘'Go Your Own Way'' è un brano esemplare di questa fase del gruppo. Firmato da Buckingham, è incalzante e sorretto da una bella melodia arricchita da splendide armonie vocali. La base ritmica è formidabile. Ci sono tutti i principali ingredienti dei Fleetwood Mac e non è un caso che il brano sarà il primo e più efficace traino promozionale all'intero album. La prima facciata si chiude con ‘'Songbird'', cantata magnificamente da Christine Mc Vie. ‘'The Chain'' è uno dei pochi pezzi firmati da tutti i componenti della band. ‘'You Make Loving Fun'' getta finalmente uno sguardo ottimista sul futuro sentimentale piuttosto che piangere sul passato. ‘'I Don't Want To Know'' è un brano dal sapore country-rock. ‘'Oh Daddy'' e un pezzo splendido. L'album si chiude con ‘'Gold Dust Woman'', una ballad ipnotica firmata da Stevie Nicks, che si rivela una scrittrice prolifica e piuttosto dotata dal punto di vista lirico.
L'album è da subito un successo senza precedenti. "Rumours" è stato a modo suo un capolavoro di quel pop-rock californiano di cui ha rappresentato il massimo apice espressivo. I musicisti hanno dato vita a bellissime armonie vocali piene di suggestione. Le undici perle di "Rumours" assumono un carattere unico producendo atmosfere particolari leggere ma intense, fruibili ma assai raffinate, orecchiabili eppur curatissime. Uno dei più belli dischi di sempre, un capolavoro assoluto!

•- 31 settimane al primo posto nelle classifiche USA
•- 134 settimane di permanenza totale nelle classifiche americane
•- 443 settimane di permanenza nelle classifiche inglesi
•- 3° posizione tra gli album più venduti di tutti i tempi
•- 1 Grammy Award vinto come miglior album del 1977

Un insieme di passioni sofferte e patetiche (nel senso etimologico del termine, ovviamente).
"Go Your Own Way" con un Lindsey quasi irato, ma estremamente melodico, e quell’assolo finale di chitarra semplicemente perfetto.
