Quale migliore modo per rappresentare il disco anni ottanta per eccellenza dei Fleetwood Mac se non segnalare la splendida copertina opera dell'artista australiano Brett-Livingstone Strong? Il dipinto è intitolato "Omaggio a Rousseau", raffigura uno stagno in modo fiabesco da cui si percepisce tutta la raffinatezza e perfezione del contenuto sonoro concepito dalla band di Mick Fleetwod.
"Tango in the night" venne pubblicato nell'aprile 1987 e fu prodotto dal chitarrista Lindsey Buckingham e dal produttore Richard Dashut che aveva già lavorato ai precedenti "Tusk" e il classico "Rumours". Infatti l'album riprende il discorso già intrapreso in passato ma ne eleva le atmosfere portandole a livelli ancor più limpidi e laccati imbevendosi di sonorità di quel decennio. Questo lavoro racchiude dodici perle pop, le più smaltate della carriera dei Fleetwood Mac, che fondono suoni pop rock, momenti più lenti e cupi a melodie divertenti e "catchy", un pizzico di samba nella traccia finale, percussioni di Mick Fleetwod e cori sognanti. Come sempre emergono le splendide voci di Buckingham alternate a quelle delle due componenti femminili Stevie Nicks e Christine McVie. "Tango in the night" fu composto soprattutto da Buckingham (in realtà è un lavoro che all'inizio era stato concepito come suo unico progetto solista ma ebbe un'evoluzione che si diramò come nuovo album della band) mentre i brani composti da Stevie Nicks sono quantitativamente minori rispetto ai lavori precedenti poichè all'epoca stava affrontando il demone della droga in riabilitazione al Betty Ford Center. Inoltre Buckingham dopo l'uscita del disco abbandonò la band per dieci anni non partecipando neanche al tour mondiale e venne sostituito da Billy Brunette e Rick Vito.
Il risultato è un disco di suoni limpidi e curati nel dettaglio. Si passa dall'apertura con la frizzante "Big love" ad uno dei pezzi scritti da Nicks ovvero "Seven wonders" molto d'impatto. Arriva il momento della languida e sognante "Everywhere" cantata da McVie con i cori di Nicks, altro brano di McVie è anche "Mystified", leggero, efficace, aggraziato. Il momento più noto del disco è il gioiello "Little lies", una caramella pop ricca di dolcezza e cori di sirene ammalianti, un super singolo. "Welcome to the room...Sara" è la personale riflessione di Stevie Nicks sulla riaiblitazione, particolarmente emozionante il momento in cui la sua voce si incontra on quella di Buckingham, mentre uno dei brani che vira verso una direzione più rock è la splendida "Isn't it midnight". Altri pezzi degni di nota sono l'introspettiva "Caroline", "Family Man" e la title track per poi chiudere le danze con "You and I", il brano più insolito.
Fatevi cullare da queste melodie suadenti che scalarono le classifiche.

La sensazione che il titolo stesso e la titletrack mi suscitano è malinconica: il ricordo di un amore passionale che non ti fa dormire la notte, un tango infinito di emozioni urlate da Lindsey.
Lo consiglio a chi sta ballando il proprio "tango" con la nostalgia (mannaggia).
