Dopo quasi 15 anni di corsa sfrenata, i Foo Fighters si fermano un pò per ripensare e/o prendere coscienza di quello che hanno fatto in questo lungo periodo. Il tutto con un bel "Greatest Hits"
Chi avrebbe scommesso anche solo 5 euro su quel Dave Grohl preoccupato dal fatto di poter essere considerato come la brutta copia di Kurt Cobain? Ha fatto di tutto per dimostrare che anche lui avrebbe potuto essere qualcuno nel mondo della musica, senza dover essere ricordato sempre e solo come il batterista di un grande gruppo grunge, e c'è riuscito! E' dal 1995 che Dave&Co fanno musica, per un totale di 6 album in studio che gli hanno consacrati come uno dei migliori gruppi rock post grunge.
A volte sottovalutati, altre volte sopravvalutati, sono sempre riusciti a far presa sul pubblico, sia che presentassero hit più commerciali, sia che presentassero qualcosa di più aggressivo. Come spesso accade, più che le interviste o affermazioni dei critici, a raccontarci la vera storia di un gruppo è la sua musica stessa. E proprio dalla loro musica si può capire la storia dei Foo Fighters, che è molto più articolata di quanto all'apparenza possa sembrare.
Vi ricordate "Foo Fighters" (da cui nel Greatest hits troviamo "This Is A Call" e "Big Me")? Buon album che venne (ingiustamente) considerato come un richiamo troppo diretto ai Nirvana, e proprio per i motivi scritti nelle prime righe, continuo a pensare che Dave si sentì quasi obbligato a cambiare decisamente rotta. La nuova rotta fu "The Colour And The Shape" (rappresentato da "Monkey Wrench", "My Hero" e "Everlong", presente anche in versione acustica) e "There Is Nothing Left To Lose" ("Learn To Fly" e "Breakout"), due album più "pop" rispetto a quello d'esordio, ma comunque molto riusciti e di grande successo. Con "One by One" ("All My Life" e "Times Like These") si cercò un ritorno a sonorità più dure, con un risultato a mio parere, un po' al di sotto delle aspettative. Il doppio CD "In Your Honor" (a sorpresa nella raccolta troviamo soltanto "Best Of You") e "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace" ("The Pretender" e "Long Road To Ruin") hanno rappresentato invece il raggiungimento della stabilità su sonorità pop-rock sempre fresche e gradevolissime. Non va dimenticato l'ottimo live acustico "Skin And Bones" (da cui è stata presa l'omonima canzone) che insieme alla seconda parte di "In Your Honor" dimostra come i Foo Fighters siano un gruppo polivalente, in grado di ottenere ottimi risultati anche in ambiti più leggeri e intimi.
Oltre ai 13 classici, troviamo anche due inediti che non sfigurano affatto: "The Wheels" e "Word Forward". La prima è la tipica canzone in stile Foo Fighters, onesta e davvero carina, con un testo dal mio punto di vista maturo e adatto al Best of. "Word Forward" mi ha subito colpito, presenta un intro che potrebbe in parte richiamare "Best Of You" e ad ogni secondo diventa sempre più intensa e più rock, questo rende la canzone interessante, ti prende... insomma, è riuscita pure questa!
L'unico "difetto" è la presenza di sole 15 canzoni, che esclude molti ottimi brani, specialmente quelli di "In Your Honor", ("DOA", "No Way Back", "Resolve"...) , ma vedendola da un altro punto di vista si può capire davvero il talento del gruppo, che con 6 album all'attivo ha realizzato almeno 20 grandi hits, dimostrazione che nonostante la pesante eredità che indirettamente i quattro Foo Fighters hanno avuto, sono riusciti lo stesso a sfondare al 100%, solo ed esclusivamente grazie alle proprie capacità, alla loro musica, ai loro ottimi live ma soprattutto alla voglia di cercare di stupire ogni volta, senza tirarsi mai indietro di fronte alle difficoltà.
Per chi non li conosce, consiglio questo "Greatest Hits" per capire come si può restare sulla cresta dell'onda anche senza vendersi il c**o e senza farsi acconciature da buffoni solo per attirare qualche "fan" in più.
Possono piacere o no, ma una cosa è certa: i Foo Fighters sono un gruppo che il rispetto l'ha conquistato con i fatti, e Dave Grohl è un vero e grande musicista, capace di rinnovarsi a 360°, ma di proporci sempre e comunque lavori molto positivi.
