Visti i recenti clamori nati attorno a “Queen II”, mi sento in dovere di entrare nel merito della questione Queen con questa recensione. Nel 1985 i Queen prendono un anno di pausa. A dispetto di quanto possa apparire da fuori, la questione economica è spesso al centro di battibecchi in casa della Regina. Mercury, il più sognatore dei quattro ne risente, è frustrato. Approfitta della pausa per concretizzare un sogno, musica come piace a lui in un progetto solista. Si reca a New York ad incidere “Mr. Bad Guy” per la Columbia. Nell’album c’è tutto se stesso, Mercury lo showman si toglie per la prima volta maschera, trucco e abitini attillati. Efficace metafora ne è la copertina che mostra nel davanti Freddie con gli occhiali da sole, mentre il retro ritrae lo sguardo scoperto e malinconico del cantante.
Il disco è un autoritratto, una autobiografia a cuore aperto, tristissima, piena di solitudini, amori falliti e false amicizie. Struggenti i contrasti tra una musicalità comunque allegra e contagiosa con testi permeati di amarezza. E’ il caso questo, ad esempio, di “Living On My Own” che al contrario di quanto gli spot Briel (e simili) vogliano farci credere è dell’85. C’è tutto il Mercury-pensiero poi, in “There Must Be More To Life Than This”, quasi avesse avuto un presagio della sua fine prematura. Bellissime le originali (nel senso che quelle in “Made in Heaven” sono canzoni di questo album risuonate orrendamente dai Queen nel ’94) “I Was Born To Love You” e “Made in Heaven”.
La voce di Freddie è al top e sempre in primo piano, le musiche d’altri tempi e un po’ demodé, sono pulite e dominate dal piano. Se siete schifati dai Remix/GreatestHits postumi, dalle compilation natalizie, dalle “We Will Rock You” cantate dai vari Back Street Boys e Britney Spears (come avverrà per Euro 2004), questo disco fa per voi. Rinvigorisce la dignità di un grandissimo artista, che ha sempre messo al primo posto il nostro divertimento e la sua musica, sacrificando se stesso. Genio e fragilità in uno. Potrei continuare a parlare di Freddie e di questo disco, che vale molto di più di tutta la discografia dei Queen dal ’76 in avanti, ma sono già ben oltre i limiti.
