Quando nel dicembre del 1974 fu pubblicato questo album, venne presentato all'acquirente con delle note quasi pietistiche che chiedevano ai recensori di trattarlo con garbo e delicatezza perchè era stato fatto esclusivamente per il piacere di chi lo avrebbe ascoltato.
In "Dark Horse" la crisi di ispirazione di George Harrison è profonda. Siamo lontanissimi dalla qualità eccelsa di "All Things Must Pass", dai trionfi del concerto per il Bangla Desh, dalla discreta piacevolezza di "Living In The Material World". All'epoca Harrison sta vivendo un periodo turbolento della sua esistenza. E' alle prese con una forte laringite e il suo matrimonio con Pattie Boyd è in crisi nera. I problemi della coppia, dovuti ai flirt della Boyd prima con Ron Wood e poi con Eric Clapton, emergono nei testi di varie canzoni. Sicuramente "Simply Shady", "Far East Man" e la deprimente "So Sad", rievocano gli stati d'animo di un amante tradito. Persino la cover di "Bye Bye Love" degli Everly Brothers si trasforma in un'amara riflessione sulla fine del suo rapporto con la moglie. "Maya Love" è piatta e incolore mentre il brano che intitola l'album è più efficace e tolto dal contesto generale funziona. Ma è troppo poco. "It Is He" con il suo testo anglo-hindi, non ha ragione di esistere e "Ding, Dong" è una canzoncina vuota e priva di senso. Purtroppo all'epoca uscì come singolo contribuendo ad offuscare quell'immagine che Harrison si era costruito negli anni seguenti la separazione del famoso gruppo d'origine.
"Dark Horse" è un album realmente noioso e privo di idee. La bellezza e la maestria compositiva di brani come "Isn't It A Pity" e "Beware Of Darkness", qui sembra persa per sempre. Il disco è suonato in modo impeccabile dagli abituali session men che accompagnano George in studio di registrazione ma la sua voce è terribilmente rauca e inespressiva. E' uno dei suoi momenti creativi più bassi anche se in seguito "Extra Texture" e "Gone Troppo" sapranno fare di peggio. Peccato che un ex beatle abbia fatto un album così.
