Cosa si può dire di questo lavoro?
Premettendo che chi scrive ha una certa simpatia per questa piccola cantante, definire "lavoro" un disco che dopo quattro anni di preparazione si presenta come un'ammucchiata di brani senza capo nè coda sarebbe, per usare un eufemismo, esagerato. Ok, Geri Halliwell, dopo "Scream If You Wanna Go Faster", s'è presa la sua vacanza, ha seguito vari impegni fra Londra e Los Angeles. Ma resta il fatto che un album del genere, un album che avrebbe dovuto segnare il ritorno alle scene dell'ex-Ginger Spice, non può essere solamente un semplice contenitore di brani più o meno orecchiabili. Perché facendo così non puoi che cercartele, le magagne. Ed infatti quest'ultimo album, "Passion", risulta un terribile flop.
Parte della responsabilità va alla casa discografica, che di certo non si è preoccupata di sponsorizzare questo album. Segno evidente di una totale mancanza di fiducia in una delle cantanti che ha raggiunto più numero uno nella classifica inglese. Ciò che mi pare chiaro da questo album è che Geri ha ancora tanto da tirare fuori. La voce è certo migliore che nei precedenti lavori. Ma il tutto risulta come una banale sequenza di melodie esageratamente semplici. Fra tutte "Superstar" e "Surrender Your Groove", brani fra i più inutili della storia. In realtà la nostra rossa preferita aveva delle buone idee, in principio. Il concept originario era quello di un album in stile dance. Poi il progetto è stato dirottato su una più collaudata scelta: il pop, il solito, straconosciuto pop. Ma stavolta Geri aveva ragione. Un album dance, sullo stile del primo singolo estratto, "Ride It", avrebbe addirittura anticipato una mossa della regina del pop, Madonna, che con "Confessions On A Dancefloor" ha letteralmente spopolato. E invece non è andata come sperava.
Nella scaletta troviamo brani occhieggianti al jazz (ma che più ricordano le movenze di Jessica Rabbit), come la titletrack e il brano di chiusura, "So I Give Up On Love". Il primo è poco convincente, mentre il secondo è molto à la Geri. E' sicuramente l'interpretazione il punto forte della Halliwell. Una grande personalità e una grande grinta.
Ma paradossalmente il tutto funziona meglio nelle ballads, specialmente in "Let Me Love You More", dedicata all'ex fidanzato, Robbie Williams.
Il secondo singolo, "Desire", annoia. "Love Never Loved Me" sarebbe andata bene a fine anni '90. "Feel The Fear" convince di più, ma subito si cade nei peggiori esempi di musica commerciale, "Superstar" e "Surrender Your Groove". "Ride It" riporta l'album a livelli accettabili, e con "There's Always Tomorrow" assistiamo ad una maturazione della cantante: è evidente, difatti, un miglioramento del controllo vocale di Geri Halliwell, che qui sfodera una voce molto carezzevole e piacevole all'orecchio. "Let Me Love You More" è sicuramente una ballata d'effetto, non tanto per la melodia, quanto per i testi. Si torna poi all'energia con "Don't Get Any Better" che, seppur non sarà ricordata per essere una gran canzone, non è male. "Loving Me Back To Life" ci riporta su note lente. Niente di che, ma la sufficienza ci sta. E infine il già citato brano jazz "So I Give Up On Love", dove la cantante si vendica raccontando i difetti dei suoi ex.
Geri ha sfornato un album che ha soddisfatto i fan più sfegatati, ma di certo chi prima non l'amava, non inizierà a farlo adesso.
