Pop, purissimo pop.
Prima di iniziare con critiche (termine neutro per indicare, quindi, pregi e difetti) è importante sapere di cosa si sta parlando. Ribadisco che si sta parlando di pura musica commerciale. Chi non ama il genere non potrà di certo apprezzare questo disco che di pop ne è strabordante!
"Scream If You Wanna Go Faster" inizia con la titletrack che ben avvia questo disco con un brano particolarmente energico (il titolo tradotto è "Urla se vuoi andare più veloce") che pare quasi indemoniato. La voce roca dell'ex Ginger Spice pare adeguata per questo genere di canzone. Il secondo brano ("Shake Your Bootie Cutie"), altrettanto vivace, è però meno incisivo. Appare evidente un'utilizzo quasi spasmodico di suoni elettronici che cercano di rendere interessante una track troppo fragile. Alla terza traccia Geri sfodera però una piccola perla di quest'album: la ballata "Calling". Certo la voce della cantante non è adeguata come lo potrebbe essere quella di una Whitney Houston, ma non sfigura. Un brano molto equilibrato. Si ritorna poi all'energia pura con la quarta canzone di quest'album che fin'ora si è ben presentato: "Feels Like Sex". Anche qui troviamo suoni certamente molto moderni, ma stavolta sono ben azzeccati, e la voce dell'ex-Spice è ben inserita nel contesto musicale. Verso la fine del brano la cantante sfodera delle seconde voci davvero niente male.
Dalla quinta traccia in poi l'album diventa troppo monotono. La scaletta è stata studiata per colpire immediatamente l'attenzione dell'ascoltatore nelle prime tracce, a scapito, però, della parte centrale del disco, privo di brani energici o di ballate ben scritte. Siamo nelle tracks dei mid-tempos, ad eccezione dell'anonima "Love Is The Only Light", che, seppur piacevole all'ascolto, risulta un po' troppo banale (e noiosa). Sostanzialmente l'adrenalina cala sensibilmente fino alla hit mondiale "It's Raining Men". Brano che ha imposto al pubblico il ritorno di una Geri Halliwell dagli addominali scolpitissimi (ma vicino all'anoressia). La canzone, cover di un brano degli anni '80 delle Weather Girls, è di una forza contagiante che ti fa venir voglia di ballare. Ricordiamo, naturalmente, che le cover raramente sono meglio degli originali. Anche stavolta è così. Geri non si avvicina neppur lontanamente alle voci delle Weather Girls, ma, a dirla tutta, non ci prova nemmeno. Ossia il suo lavoro è stato di un'attualizzazione del brano ai suoni che oggi van per la maggiore. E il risultato è un prodotto commerciale che ha riscosso grande successo. La voce della Halliwell pare essere in grado di sostenere quel genere di note. Peccato che le esibizioni di questo brano siano sempre state rigorosamente in playback.
Il dubbio sulle sue effettive capacità, sfortunatamente, restano.
Siamo agli sgoccioli di quest'album con un avvio niente male, un eccessivo rilassamento a metà album, e una ripresa alla terz'ultima traccia. La penultima, "Heaven & Hell (Being Geri Halliwell)", è una canzone introspettiva sulla fama, e sui pro e contro dell'avere costantemente i riflettori addosso. Ciò che colpisce è l'insieme di suoni che compongono questa canzone. Per fare un esempio, ad un certo punto troviamo dei suoni che ricordano le musichette dei Luna Park. Un bell'esperimento. Forse si pecca troppo di egocentrismo.
L'ultima traccia è "I Was Made That Way", brano introspettivo e noioso. Bruttissima conclusione per un album che meritava certamente un finale migliore.
Un album ricco di suoni moderni, una voce roca non sempre adeguata ma che svolge a dovere il proprio compito senza stonature. Stroncare la Halliwell solo perché "troppo commerciale" sarebbe comodo. In realtà, l'abbiamo visto, buone idee ne ha. L'importante è non strafare.
