Non è solo il buon vino che invecchiando migliora… Pensate alle chitarre d’annata, le cosiddette chitarre Vintage, tipo una Fender Stratocaster del ’57 o una Gibson Les Paul del ’58; o ancora, a certe bellissime ragazze ventenni che non possiedono però ancora la maturità o la sensualità che una bella quarantenne può vantare; oppure (se è di musica che si sta parlando, come del resto in questo caso), ci vengono alla mente delle opere talmente antesignane da far sì che ciò che appariva freddo, forse addirittura glaciale venti o trenta anni prima, ci appaia oggi molto più comprensibile e vicino. Va bene, magari non sarà propriamente il caso di questo disco, ma era da tempo che stavo cercando lo spunto per una partenza ad effetto, abbiate il buon cuore di perdonarmi (comunque che l’album in questione sia invecchiato bene è un dato di fatto).
Dunque, era il 1978, Gino Vannelli aveva già inciso cinque album, tutti più o meno riusciti; mancava però ancora il capolavoro, ovvero il disco in grado di sintetizzare al meglio tutte le sue innate doti di musicista e cantante; ecco quindi arrivare "Brother to Brother" che, assieme al successivo "Nightwalker", rappresenta forse l’apice della carriera musicale del cantautore italo-canadese.
L’album si apre sotto il segno del rock, con un pezzo tanto aggressivo quanto ricercato come “Appaloosa”, con i fluidissimi assolo di Carlos Rios (chitarra) e la batteria bella presente a scandire l’andamento del brano. Si prosegue quindi con “The River Must Flow”, altra canzone decisamente ben riuscita, col falsetto di Vannelli che ben si contrappone al coro femminile intento a scandire, con ritmica cadenza, le parole del titolo.
Ma è con i pezzi a seguire che Vannelli da il meglio di sé; “I Just Wanna Stop”, divenuto poi un classico (scritto dal fratello nel nostro, Ross Vannelli) sembrerebbe al primo ascolto un brano scritto appositamente per scalare le classifiche ma è, in realtà, una raffinatissima ballad, dove Ernie Watts ci regala un assolo di sassofono verso il finale da far venire i brividi…Un feeling davvero unico!
Da citare sono anche la bellissima “Feel Like Flying”, che ripete quasi il crescendo emozionale di “I Just Wanna Stop” e la title-track, dove un possente intermezzo strumentale (con tanto di assolo virtuosistico di basso elettrico ad opera di Jimmy Haslip che non farebbe storcere il naso nemmeno al più incallito fan dei Dream Theater) spezza l’andamento del brano spiazzando l’ascoltatore, per poi riaccompagnarlo delicatamente sulla strada della melodia anche grazie alla successiva “Wheels of Life”, pezzo dotato di straordinaria ricchezza melodica.
Chiudono l’album “The Evil Eye” (forse il pezzo più debole del disco) e la malinconica “People I Belong To” (di tutt’altra consistenza), che Gino dedica ai suoi parenti, amici ed affetti.
Le sofisticatissime architetture sonore di questo disco lo rendono tutt’oggi un’opera unica nel suo ambito, e il fatto che forse ancora nessuno sia riuscito a raggiungerla, nell’arco di tutto questo tempo, fa di certo riflettere.
Non rappresenta solamente il più importante traguardo nell’ottima discografia di Vannelli, è anche una delle più alte vette mai raggiunte dal genere cui appartiene.
