Quando parlo a qualcuno dei Grand Funk Railroad, la maggior parte di queste persone non sa nemmeno cosa sto dicendo, e ciò mi fa capire che siamo davvero messi male se non si conosce quella che io ritengo una delle più grandi band hard rock degli anni '70. Tecnica, pathos, potenza e dolcezza, queste sono le caratteristiche che si possono ricercare nei lavori di questo grande gruppo.
Ma veniamo a questo album sfornato nel 1972. Già dall'inizio si capisce di essere al cospetto di una formazione dotata di una bravura e di una creatività pazzesca, infatti l'opener "Flight Of The Phoenix" è un concentrato di potenza e tecnica, con una base di tastiera che è qualcosa di spaventoso, riconducibile solo alle migliori performance di Ken Hensley e John Lord. Ma ogni brano di questo album rappresenta a mio parere una perla che si va ad incastonare perfettamente con le altre durante tutto l'ascolto del disco. Aspetto positivo di questo album è che oltre al predominio logico dell'hard rock, in questo lavoro la band riesce benissimo e senza cadere nella ripetitività, ad inserire melodie blues, soul e rock & roll, rendendolo più interessante e più completo.
Per quanto concerne le performance individuali, il livello è elevatissimo su tutti i fronti, le musiche in alcuni momenti sono addirittura devastanti riuscendo comunque a passare a fasi decisamente più soft con una semplicità paurosa. La prova del singer Mark Farner è strepitosa per tutta la durata del disco, senza eccessi e con un carisma eccezionale. Ben arrangiate anche le background vocals, sempre al posto giusto e anche qui senza esagerare.
Concludendo, si tratta di un album da avere assolutamente, bellissimo per tutta la sua durata, musica allo stato puro, per fare esplodere le casse del vostro stereo.
