Uno dei picchi indie americani degli anni '90 (anno di uscita 1997) , uno di quei 5-6 dischi che definisce una malinconia ipermoderna, anzi suggerisce l'indissolubile unione tra progresso-a-tutti-i-costi e alienazione, altro che lagna rock quindi, bassa fedeltà a 24 carati, molto couplandiano nel suo incedere esistenzialista. Album balordo e intenso, il più spontaneo e forse immediato del gruppo, vissuto sul filo di una poetica aliena e antica assieme, il folk sghembo della gioventù indie americana abbinata alle sperimentazioni dei Kraftwerk, frequenti i giochini kraftwerkeriani su musichette robotiche ("A. M 180" ; "Everything Beautiful I Far Away"), rumori di fondo, interferenze e scricchiolii , broken beat, bassa fedeltà, il tutto innalzato a cifra stilistica, questo è il disco che farebbe un Neil Young giovane alle prese col caos sintetico e digitale di fine millennio, qualcuno infatti ha parlato di questo disco come del tonight’s the night dell’era cibernetica. Lo spirito è fortemente indie, "Collective Dreamwish Of Upperclass Elegance" è un picco di atmosfera ovattata, di malinconia sospesa su un sibilo cosmico secobarbitalico su cui si innestano gli strumenti della tradizione rock e la voce afflitta da troppi ascolti depressivi della slacker generation, risultato: inquietudine a go-go, instabilità di quota e spostamenti d'aria, pezzo straniante e pieno di fascino che si ritrova più volte nel resto del disco. Arrivati a metà anni '90 ibridare "is the reason": "Summer Here Kids" è Pavement + Sparklehorse, le tastiere vintage e i tanti suoni digital-zen accompagnano invece “Go Progress Chrome”, notare in "Laughing Stock" i frequenti intarsi robotici alla man-machine su una perfetta canzone pop–rock dalle melodie degne dei primi REM.
C’è odore di psicofarmaci in queste tracce, ballads folk inzuppate nell’indietronica che palpitano ipnoinducenti un’angoscia flebile e una debolezza tenace, sono canzoni pervase da un senso di dolce paralisi psichica (la gracile mestizia benzodiazepinica di "Why Took You Advice"), di estati autunnali (“Lawn & So On” conclusa dal canto dei grilli in una notte di mezz'estate), di foga noise punk e rabbia sgangherata alla Pavement.
