Ci sono gruppi che fanno dei virtuosismi tecnici e dei continui cambi di tempo il loro marchio di fabbrica, mentre ce ne sono altri che usano come formula, abbastanza semplice ma altrettanto funzionale, il ripetere continuamente la stessa cosa, riuscendo sempre nell'obiettivo. Nel power metal, più o meno funziona così. Cori accattivanti, un bel ritmo incalzante, un paio di ballad qua e là, ed una voce cristallina a fare da sfondo.
"Ascoltata una canzone power, le hai sentite tutte!" Ah no, attenzione. Come dicevo ad inizio recensione, per la prima categoria di gruppi esistono altrettanti fan che ripudiano questa formula del genere power, criticando la poca innovazione che un suddetto gruppo ha nei suoi lavori, e partendo con insulti che se analizzati a fondo, risultano solo un paio di stronzate dette, il più delle volte, tanto perchè "Ehi, ascoltare roba complicata fa figo, e quello che è semplice fa schifo". O perlomeno, questi sono i casi in cui mi sono imbattuto io.
Gli Hammerfall rientrano pienamente in questa categoria di gruppo power, non hanno mai cambiato di una virgola il loro sound durante più di 10 anni di carriera. A volte hanno pubblicato grandi album (Glory To The Brave, Threshold), e a volte mezze ciofeche (No Sacrifice, No Victory, Renegade), ma in media sono stati, e sono ancora, un ottimo gruppo. Nel 2011 il gruppo svedese pubblica "Infected", album che cercava di cambiare, ma non più di tanto, il tipico sound della band, con canzoni più oscure, più elaborate, e che ebbe una discreta accoglienza, resa negativa anche dal fatto che i siti tanto specializzati che avevano denigrato gli Hammerfall per il loro non cambiare mai, denigravano anche questo lavoro con la scusa di aver cambiaot sound abbandonando completamente le loro radici. Non va bene proprio niente a questi, eh?
Neanche un anno dopo però, gli Hammerfall sono intenzionati a celebrare i 15 anni di attività con un live che prevedeva come luogo di esibizione un posto assolutamente inaspettato, ovvero il Dalhalla di Rattvik, in Svezia. Dicevo inaspettato, proprio perchè questo luogo in realtà non è un semplice posto aperto con un palco, ma si tratta di un enorme cava scavata nella roccia, con un immenso specchio d'acqua a fare da contorno. Lo stage dove i musicisti suonano quindi, è diviso dalle gradinate dove i fan si godono il concerto da questa sorta di mini ruscello, uno spettacolo che visto dal vivo, ma anche semplicemente da casa nella versione DVD, è semplicemente mozzafiato.
La scaletta ovviamente, non è da meno. Che diamine, sono sempre i 15 anni di attività! Si passa da pezzi carichi di impatto come "Any Means Necessary", "Riders Of The Storm", e "Blood Bound", dove in quest'ultima seppur Joacim tenti di far collaborare il pubblico, questo sembra totalmente spento, un vero peccato, a canzoni più contenute come la bellissima "Always Will Be" e "Patient Zero". Trova spazio in tutto questo anche un bell'assolo di batteria di Anders Joahnsson, un po' breve ma buono. Stranamente il pubblico sembra risvegliarsi dal letargo verso la fine del concerto, dove in pezzi come "Hearts Of Fire", urla a squarciagola il ritornello, e giustamente, ascoltando classici del primo album come "Hammerfall", "The Dragon Lies Bleeding", e "Glory To The Brave". Efficace anche l'esecuzione di "Last Man Standing", canzone inclusa nella raccolta speciale del gruppo per i 10 anni di attività, che in sede live risulta una vera e propria bomba. Da segnalare sempre la voce di Joacim Cans, che non cala in nessun momento, ma che risulta forse troppo eccessivamente pulita in alcuni frangenti, ma che rimane sempre godibile.
Si possono dire tante cose su un gruppo come gli Hammerfall quindi, che non siano degli innovatori, che i loro ritornelli saranno più o meno tutti uguali, che arrivati ai giorni d'oggi dovrebbero sciogliersi e lasciare posto ad altri, ma queste a parer mio, sono tutte cavolate. Se un gruppo diverte, e sopratutto riesce nell'intento di non cadere mai nella banalità ad ogni uscita, pur riproponendo sempre la stessa formula, perchè dovrebbe sciogliersi? Per far contenti quelli che non sono capaci di ascoltare una canzone tanto semplice nella sue esecuzione quanto di impatto? Ognuno è libero di fare come vuole, e di ascoltare ciò che vuole, questo è poco ma sicuro. Ma cercate di uscire un momento da questa ottica di ricerca di musicisti /gruppi eccessivamente tecnici e complicati, e ascoltate un gruppo musicale per quello che è. Prendete "Gates Of Dalhalla" per quello che è, ossia un'ora e mezza circa di pure cazzeggio e divertimento, niente di più.
