Hai costruito una vita molto complicata fatta di alti e bassi. Fatta di sole e di pioggia. E hai avuto tanto tempo a disposizione per divertirti e per giocare. Sei stata così presa dal gioco, che non ti sei accorta che la tua vita stava andando in pezzi. Ora stai trascorrendo il resto del tuo tempo nella ricerca di tutte le sue parti per ricomporre il mosaico. A questo punto spero tu possa trovarli, trovare tutti i pezzi della tua vita in tutto ciò che vedi. Spero anche che tu possa trovare la mia anima dentro di te.
Ecco la traduzione prosaica di “Hide and Seek” il brano più toccante del disco di esordio di Howard Jones, datato 1984. Questa canzone ha una sonorità, una melodia così toccante e coinvolgente che non si può evitare di cantarla. Presente al “Live Aid”, al contrario degli altri altisti che interpretavano i loro best hits, Mr.Jones suonò solo questo pezzo perché lo riteneva il più adatto alla tipologia dell’evento.
Disco con un titolo enigmatico “Human's Lib” (Movimento di liberazione dell'umanità) è uscito subito dopo l’esplosione del suo primo singolo “New Song” che ha toccato il primo posto nella classifica UK. Successivamente entra in testa alla classifica il tormentone “What Is Love” grazie alla programmazione assidua di MTV e per ultimo “Pearl in the Shell” sempre nelle Top ten.
Howard Jones è la figura più determinante del synth pop di metà anni '80. È riuscito a mescolare il suono ad alta tecnologia della New Wave con testi legati all’amore assoluto e la visione ottimista della generazione precedente. La musicalità a colori vivaci sono il timbro di fabbrica dei lavori del One Man Band di Southampton che ha dato il suo meglio proprio nella prima uscita. Il tour seguito da questo album, fu apprezzatissimo, tanto che la critica lo segnalò come il nuovo Elton John. Howard Jones era solito presentarsi attorniato da ogni tipo di tastiera e sintetizzatore. Con la sua l’allegria ed il suo suono martellante, faceva saltare il pubblico al ritmo continuo della drum machine.
Sfortunatamente, la carriera artistica si arenò molto velocemente. Poche idee nuove e reinterpretazioni dei vecchi brani in molteplici versioni. Null’altro.
Riascoltarlo fuori dal periodo di produzione, lo fa apprezzare per la contemporaneità dei suoni e degli arrangiamenti.
