Due anni dopo "Soundtrack To Your Escape" torna il quintetto svedese che meglio rappresenta il panorama "melodic death metal" moderno, forse unici portabandiera che finora si sono distinti tra le miriadi di gruppi che si imitano l'un l'altro, senza dare nell'occhio con qualcosa che li contraddistingua. Sicuramente questo nuovo lavoro porta tutta la carica a cui il gruppo ci ha abituato, ma tende a garantire più orecchiabilità e facilità di ascolto, volutamente diretto ad un pubblico più di massa. Che la band non sappia però come intrattenere anche il pubblico meno appassionato al genere non si può certo dire, anzi questo album mette in luce come avvicinarsi al commerciale per la band non sembra essere un problema, accostandosi con una maggior melodia nella voce, qualche componente elettronica più elaborata e una presenza più misurata dello screaming che li ha resi famosi, anche agli ascoltatori abituati a una maggior leggerezza, magari a livello degli Slipknot di Wait and Bleed.
Il primo pezzo, Take This Life, apre l'album in bellezza, e risulta subito un pezzo molto bello, forse tra i migliori dell'intero album. Veloce come pochi altri, introduce la nuova fusione di melodico e screaming che Anders ci propina in modo splendido, senza dare troppo peso nè all'una nè all'altra componente. Bel pezzo. Segue Leeches, un pezzo più calmo e rilassante, che introduce invece l'elettronica che fa da accompagnamento ai ritmi thrash/death e alle distorsioni veramente cattive (che il quintetto si porta dietro fin dalle origini) in modo pressochè perfetto.
Reflect The Storm è un pezzo un po' sciatto, privo di quell'atmosfera che avvolge molti altri pezzi; fa capire velocemente come il tentativo di commercializzarsi senza sembrare troppo mainstream possa anche portare a risultati scarsi. Segue una canzone molto pesta, accompagnata da una voce femminile, è Dead End; forse grazie alla voce candida della cantante, in puro stile Lacuna Coil, il pezzo ha una maggior facilità ad entrare in testa, ed infatti scivola molto leggermente nonostante la sua pesantezza granitica non indifferente.
Scream, con un inizio thrash metal stile primi gloriosi anni dei 'Tallica, porta l'ascoltatore ad un livello superiore, dove pogo e headbanging sono d'obbligo. La canzone, grazie alle distorsioni pestissime e alla follia di Anders, risulta infatti una delle migliori dell'album, e sa coinvolgere come poche altre. Come Clarity, la title track dal sapore più sdolcinato, accompagnata dalla chitarra acustica che abbiamo sentito veramente poco dagli svedesi, è un bel pezzo, anche se il tentativo di melodicità accompagnato da fasi più alternative metal, non risulta così apprezzabile da garantire alla canzone di entrare in testa facilmente. Vacuum, tanto veloce quanto devastante, è la canzone che forse meglio collega la cattiveria ineccepibile delle strofe con i ritornelli più melodici e tranquilli, col pulito d'obbligo. Purtroppo, la canzone è troppo nello standard degli In Flames, e questo toglie qualche punto alla canzone, comunque ottimamente composta, e con sonorità che quasi fondono Fear Factory, Slipknot e Blind Guardian degli ultimi tempi.
Pacing Death's Trail è il classico pezzo In Flames, con ben poco da dire a parte un riff portante che tiene alto il ritmo della canzone nonostante la sua incisiva ripetitività. Il pezzo successivo, Crawl Through Knives, con un inizio che sembra la versione death-metallizzata dei Papa Roach, è un altro pezzo da marchio puro garantito "In Flames" con bellissimi riff (pur non presentando nessuna particolare innovazione). Venus Terminus, altro pezzo che non lascia per niente l'amaro in bocca ai fans del genere, con il suo ritmo martellante, risulta alla fine un pezzo un po' scocciante, forse per la ripetitività dei riff e del giro di batteria, più volte sentito non solo in questo album. Our Infinite Struggle, una canzone che invece rispecchia la fusione del vecchio stile Flames col nuovo più semplice, alterna ritmi lenti ma potenti a passaggi più veloci e trascinanti, passando anche per un chorus arpeggiato che non guasta per niente. La voce però tende a far precipitare il livello generale della canzone, con lo screaming di Anders che sembra cedere sotto la pesantezza costante e schiacciante del pezzo. Vanishing Light è la classica sfuriata In Flames che lascia il lavoro alle chitarre. Your Bedtime Story Is Scaring Everyone, pezzo finale e veramente interessante, è un pezzo dalla lentezza e dall'atmosfera progressive che tiene l'ascoltatore peso per 3 minuti prima di esplodere tra distorsioni e un cantato che sembra quasi da colonna sonora.
Alla fine questo album continua a confermare l'andamento non sempre costante della band, che comunque rappresenta l'unica vera sicurezza nel panorama death metal mainstream degli ultimi anni, e garantisce anche alla scuola metal svedese d'avanguardia uno dei primi posti nella classifica dei generi più cattivi.
L'album è di sicuro consigliato sia a chi ama gli In Flames sin da Colony passando per Reroute to Remain e Soundtrack To Your Escape, ma anche a chi vuole esplorare il panorama death metal contemporaneo, incorporando infatti Come Clarity quella fusion di death metal e melodia che più rappresenta gli In Flames del nuovo millennio.
