Sono passati due anni dal discusso "Soundtrack To Your Escape" e i 5 svedesi tornano sulle scene con questo album che i fans di prima data non apprezzeranno molto. Affermo con certezza questo perchè chi è abituato a sentire solo velocità siderali, scream vocals da parte di Anders e a non sentire suoni elettronici, rimarrà deluso. Del resto non ci si può aspettare altro, visto gli ultimi 2 lavori. Personalmente dividerei la carriera degli In Flames in 2 parti, dove “ Colony” determina la fine della prima parte e “Clayman” l'inizio della seconda dove la band decide di esplorare lidi più elettronici per staccarsi ed evolvere dal death/trash alla svedese che li aveva contraddistinti agli inizi (Jester su tutti). Il presente album rispetta la sequenza di eventi musicali che si sono ascoltati nei lavori più recenti, e risulta essere il più completo, ricco e fantasioso.
Anders utilizza sempre più spesso la voce pulita alternandola a parti urlate con una grinta e una forza veramente incredibili e immutate negli anni, gli altri confermano la bravura del combo e al ricerca di evoluzione dalla scena metal scandinava ormai colma di bands che pestano duro, ma che non suonano più nulla di nuovo da anni. L'album si apre con il pugno in faccia di "Take This Life" che è certamente uno degli episodi più riusciti del lavoro, con la sua velocità e Anders che "sbraita" per tutta la canzone, i pochi momenti di calma sono conditi con alcune clean vocals. La foga trascinante della opener, lascia il posto alla più elettronica e lenta (ma comunque carica) "Leeches". Segue "Reflect The Storm", episodio trascurabile, un po’ piatto e con poco mordente. "Dead End" inizia veloce però ci presenta una voce femminile (che mi ricorda brani di alcune band metal con voce "rosa"), ma non mi lascio tradire da questi stacchi femminili insoliti, infatti la canzone pesta bene, si lascia ascoltare ed entra facilmente in testa. Eccoci alle 3 canzoni che mi hanno impressionato di più, trattasi di "Scream", "Come Clarity" e "Vacuum". Si parte con la compatta "Scream", molto ben suonata e cantata dal pazzo Anders che offre una delle migliori prestazioni dell'album: headbanging d’ obbligo. La title track si apre con voce filtrata accompagnata da una chitarra acustica, va poi su lidi più metal, ma non corre mai troppo: apprezzabile il tentativo di melodicità non smielata e comunque piacevole.
Subito dopo veniamo travolti dall'arrembante velocità di "Vacuum", certamente una delle migliori canzoni mai scritte dagli In Flames da "Clayman" ad oggi e forse la migliore dell’ album: riesce ad unire alla velocità di esecuzione e la cattiveria delle strofe gli stacchi dei ritornelli più tranquilli e con voce pulita. Si continua con "Pacing Death's Trail" che pur non aggiungendo nulla al lavoro, è una canzone potente e in pieno stile In Flames; "Crawl Through Knives" ancora una “ flames style” al 100% ricca di cori e buonissimi riffs, l’ inizio di canzone promette bene, ma il risultato finale non si lascia ricordare e non convince del tutto; la bellissima "Venus Terminus" ci fa nuovamente sentire l'anima dei nostri, pochi fronzoli, alte velocità e tanto buon metal. "Our Infinite Struggle" resta su alti livelli e passa da ritmi sostenuti a passaggi più lenti e potenti, alla parte centrale arpeggiata e quasi riflessiva, non avrebbe sfigurato su "Colony". "Vanishing Light" contiene un lavoro pregevole delle chitarre ed una carica notevole e ci prepara alla sfuriata della canzone di chiusura. Sfuriata che non c’ è, arrivano invece 5 minuti di grande intensità, 5 minuti da pelle d'oca, non ho parole, per definire questa canzone completamente fuori dagli schemi della storia musicale della band, tutta da ascoltare.
In definitiva l'album non è indispensabile, ma comunque non delude gli ascoltatori che si sono messi l'animo in pace e capiscono che gli In Flames non faranno MAI più un "Jester part 2". Gli In Flames sono questi suonano ancora forte e batto di gran lunga la marmaglia di sbarbati biondini svedesi che cercano di farsi strada scimmiottando lo stile swedish dei primi anni ’ 90 credendo che basti andare veloci per essere bravi, ma si sbagliano, ne hanno ancora di strada da fare e gli In Flames ancora una volta spostano le coordinate del metal “made in Svezia” .

Una buona prova, per un gruppo che sembrava spacciato.

Questo album mette in luce come avvicinarsi al commerciale per la band non sembra essere un problema.
Scream [...] risulta infatti una delle migliori dell'album, e sa coinvolgere come poche altre.
