Siamo nell'anno 1999, anno veramente prolifico per la musica internazionale. A metà maggio si inizia a sentire in tutte le radio del mondo e su MTV viene trasmesso un sacco di volte il suo video, l'echeggiante nuova canzone dei "Jamiroquai", "Canned Heat". E quasi dopo un mese, ovvero nei primi giorni dell'estate, esce "Synkronized", quarto disco di Jason Kay e compagni.
Questo album doveva uscire già nel 1998, con la stessa formazione che aveva inciso il campione di incassi "Travelling Without Moving", ma il bassista di allora, il grande e fantomatico Stuart Zender, disse (qualche mese prima che uscisse il disco) al caro Jay che avrebbe lasciato la band dopo la sua pubblicazione e che quindi non intendeva andare in tour con loro a causa del troppo stress. Jason gli si rivoltò contro e ci fu un'intensa lite fra i due che finì con il seguente risultato: Jason non pagò i diritti a Zender e decise di rifare completamente l'album da capo (tra lo stupore generale della band), chiamando come sostituto il bassista Nick Fyffe. Prima di ri-registrare l'album, venne pubblicato il singolo colonna sonora di "Godzilla", "Deeper Underground" (nel quale video il mostro esce dallo schermo del cinema e Jay si mette a ballare tra il panico del pubblico e le distruzioni). Questa sarà l'ultima canzone pubblicata e registrata dai Jamiroquai con Zender e l'ultima sua esibizione con la band sarà a Top Of The Pops il 23 luglio 1998 proprio con codesta canzone.
Alla fine però (dopo aver digerito l'abbandono dell'ormai ex-bassista), il 14 giugno 1999 esce l'atteso "Synkronized". Una bella sfida per il gruppo che è chiamato a ripetere il successone (soprattutto negli USA) di "Travelling Without Moving". Il disco unisce Pop, Funky ed Musica Elettronica. Essa si sente soprattutto in pezzi come "Planet Home" (dove però c'è anche un po' di salsa dopo il ritornello), in "Destitute Illusions" e in "Supersonic".
Il primo pezzo (il già citato singolo "Canned Heat") è un brano dance (come ripete anche nella canzone) molto ballabile contornato da un videoclip fantastico dove Jason dimostra tutte le sue doti eccentriche di ballerino. Poco Acid Jazz e molti sintetizzatori come si può ascoltare nella traccia numero 2, "Planet Home". Secondo singolo estratto da questo album (e lanciato solo negli USA) è "Black Capricorn Day". Molti fan lo detestano ma per me è una bella canzone (anche se dura un po' troppo). Il quarto pezzo è un gioiellino da sentire Live ed è comunque bello. Si chiama "Soul Education" ed ha un testo fantastico e proprio per la sua bellezza che fossi stato io l'avrei scelto come 3° video al posto di "Supersonic". "Falling" è una canzone d'amore di Jay dedicata alla sua all'epoca compagna.
Il CD poi si rovina (per modo di dire) con i pezzi "Destitute Illusions" e "Supersonic". Il primo è un brano completamente (anche se all'inizio Jay dice: "You may think you're in heaven") strumentale e sarà anche l'ultimo della band, mentre il secondo è il terzo singolo estratto ed è l'ultimo pezzo suonato da Buchanan assieme alla band in cui compare il didjeridoo. In sostanza due canzoni davvero... suggestive. L'album poi continua con "Butterfly" (la cui la versione live al Montreux Jazz Festival 2003 voglio ancora ascoltarla!!!!!!!) e "Where Do We Go From Here", brano dove la ritmicità regna sovrana (piccola parentesi, non l'anno mai fatta Live porco dio!!!!!!!). Si finisce poi con il quarto singolo estratto, "King For A Day". In esso vi sono belle parti di archi che ne fanno un'opera alla Wagner. L'album contiene anche come Bonus Track il singolo già citato dell'anno precedente "Deeper Underground" dove un'incalzante melodia rock fatta con il synth la rende stupefacente Live (infatti, insieme alla magnifica "Space Cowboy" e ad "Love Foolosophy", c'è sempre nei Live della band).
Album che sancisce ancora una volta la poppizzazione della band a causa della troppa pressione che esercitano le odiate case discografiche. Un album senza Acid Jazz o Soul, ma che però è molto ballabile. Mi chiedo ancora dove siano andate a finire le leggendarie tracce buttate nel cestino dopo la furibonda lite di Jay con Zender. Beh comunque è acqua passata perché oggi i Jamiroquai sono una così certa realtà della musica che non hanno bisogno di niente per scrivere belle canzoni.
Ho sentito che in questa estate sono in studio per registrare le nuove tracce. Speriamo che siano belle!!!! Cari Jamiri... Stupiteci!!!
