The Undertones: The Undertones (1979)
Appartenenti al movimento punk, nato in Inghilterra nel 1977, i The Undertones possono essere considerati a pieno titolo i Ramones irlandesi. Discostandosi dai gruppi punk inglesi di allora, nelle loro canzoni preferiscono parlare di ragazze, estate e sesso invece che di politica!
Formati nel 1976 esordiscono nel 1979 con l'album omonimo, creando una delle pagine più belle del punk popizzato: canzoni cortissime e riff semplicissimi accompagnati da una voce estremamente pop sono le caratteristiche di questo disco, a parer mio stupendo, che grazie alla sua elementare spontaneità riesce a far breccia nel cuore di qualunque ascoltatore!!
Assai lontani dalla rabbia e frustrazione che animava la maggior parte delle band britanniche del '77 i The Undertones caricano le loro composizioni di ottimismo e spensieratezza creando dei piccoli gioielli punk; basti citare "Here comes the summer", "Jimmy Jimmy", "Girls don't like me", nei quali inneggiano (in un epoca in cui tutti "fanno politica") una rivolta della normalità!
La vera perla del disco è tuttavia "Teenage kicks", che si può sicuramente considerare un inno generazionale e annoverare tra i simboli del movimento punk britannico e non solo.
Questo album è veramente da riscoprire.... Purtroppo i The Undertones sono finiti nel dimenticatoio ed è un peccato perchè è un gruppo assai meritevole, non per niente era una delle band preferite di John Peel (rivoluzionario dj inglese)!! La loro influenza su molti gruppi punk odierni è enorme, ma come spesso accade per la maggior parte delle band seminali sono stati dimenticati ingiustamente....perciò ascoltateli ascoltateli ascoltateli ne rimmarete folgorati!!
