È ancora un tentativo di affermare la propria personalità di pop singer questo secondo album di Jennifer Paige, uscito nel 2001 a tre anni di distanza dal debutto. La ragazza s'impegna, questo non le va negato, eppure c'è qualcosa che le impedisce di farsi largo in mezzo alle acque insidiose dello showbiz. E per una come lei che fa un pop levigato, questo può essere un grave handicap.
"Positively Somewhere" presenta dodici canzoni ben congegnate dove si fa apprezzare, ora incisiva ora vaporosa, la voce limpida della stellina americana. Ma perché partire con una cover, in questo caso "These Days" delle australiane Bardot? Versione molto efficace, peraltro: un energico pop-rock segnato dall'alternanza tra chitarre acustiche ed elettriche, queste ultime a rendere più corposo il suono nei ritornelli, e da una percussione possente. Le chitarre elettriche rinforzano anche nella successiva "Here With Me", altro pop-rock diviso a metà tra la dolcezza del suono, affidata alle tastiere, e la sua saturazione ad opera del dilagare delle chitarre.
Il resto dell'album si muove lungo territori non particolarmente originali, anche nella scelta dei pezzi: "Stranded", altra cover, questa volta della cantante americana Plumb, esce come singolo nel tentativo di risollevare l'accoglienza un po' fiacca riservata al disco. I diversi brani mettono comunque in risalto la voce ben impostata di Jennifer e le riuscite invenzioni melodiche di cui il disco abbonda. "Feel So Far Away", "Tell Me When", e altri, sono esempi di un sophisticated pop che trova nel senso della misura, nell'assenza di ambizioni velleitarie, e nell'equilibrio che ne deriva, la sua giustificazione più autentica.
Questo è insomma il disco di una ragazza che forse sogna di diventare una star, ma che come accade nel video di "Stranded" si esibisce in un locale senza pubblico. L'album vende troppo poco per la casa discografica, che molla la bionda per strada. Qualcosa nel meccanismo si inceppa e passano sette anni prima di vederla tornare sulla scena musicale ("Best Kept Secret", 2008). In questo lato oscuro di Jennifer, in questo senso di incompiutezza, risiedono per me i motivi di interesse per la cantante americana.
